Lake Forest College seeks a full time Technical Director/Resident Designer for its Theater Department, to begin no later than August 1, 2021 for a two-year appointment with potential for extension. The ideal candidate is multi-talented, with a proactive and creative approach to theatrical production.

Responsibilities include technical oversight for productions in a configurable black box space, designing sets and/or lighting of productions, and/or teaching of courses and independent studies (such as Stagecraft and Design for the Stage), along with supervision of student workers. The Technical Director is both a practicing technician and an educator/mentor.

A MFA in Theater or equivalent theater experience is preferred. The successful candidate will have knowledge of scenic, lighting, and sound design practices and the ability to effectively translate a designer’s renderings, models and/or sketches into practical stage settings. The successful candidate will be able to build sets and hang light plots.

This is a full-time exempt position, but hours increase during technical rehearsals. Knowledge of or prior experience in Chicago theater will be valued, for Lake Forest College makes extensive use of Chicago as a curricular resource.

A highly selective liberal arts college located on Chicago’s North Shore, Lake Forest College enrolls approximately 1,500 students from over 47 states and 78 countries. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Send cover letter, c.v., and design portfolio to theatersearch@mx.lakeforest.edu. In your cover letter, please address your thoughts on teaching and mentorship, and at least one of your references should speak to your experience as an educator/mentor. Please include contact information for three references. Materials should be addressed to Professor Richard Pettengill, Search Committee Chair, and must be received by July 1, 2021. Interviews will be conducted by phone/Zoom and on campus at Lake Forest College.
