Serve as a crew leader providing daily direction and supervision of assigned staff. Adheres to all industry safety standards. Also performs semi-skilled manual labor, using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and equipment. Work may require operation of utility vehicles, trailers, light trucks, dump trucks, tractors, chain saws, power tools and mowers. Routine tasks are performed under general supervision with considerable independence, but are subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion. Performs other work as requested by the Grounds Supervisor.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the maintenance of all the University’s grounds and paved surfaces as directed by the Grounds Supervisor
  • Operates edgers, clippers and other hand and power tools used in grounds maintenance
  • Inspects and maintains equipment and machines following a preventative maintenance program
  • Lays sod; waters grounds; rakes; picks up paper and other debris from assigned areas, installs landscaping and repairs roads
  • Operates riding mowers, tractors, light motor vehicles, utility vehicles, dump trucks and trailers
  • Mows grass, cuts weeds, edges and trims; prunes, sprays and mulches trees, shrubs and lawns as requested by Grounds Supervisor
  • Assists in the preparation of facilities for special use; erects and dismantles scaffolding; moves supplies, equipment and/or furniture to and from University facilities
  • Abides by, and complies with, all University policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as directed by Grounds Supervisor

Minimum Education: HS Diploma/GED preferred. Writing/reading at 10th grade level required

Required Skills
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the turf maintenance industry
  • Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work in adverse environmental conditions
  • Skill in the operation of hand and power tools
  • Skill in the operation of light motor vehicle
Required Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred, reading and writing ability at tenth-grade level required;
  • Some experience in grounds work or landscaping work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
  • Must be proficient with all phases of industry standards and procedures as to the installation of irrigation and safety standards
  • Minimum one-year experience in the field training with a professional
