Hiring Department The University of Missouri has an immediate opening for a Health Physics Supervisor at the Research Reactor (MURR). MURR® is a multidisciplinary center with the three-fold mission of promoting research in the sciences and engineering, providing educational and training opportunities for students, and providing irradiation and isotope production services. MURR’s irradiation and isotope production services include the weekly processing and shipping of a variety of radioisotopes and radiochemicals ranging from FDA-approved radiopharmaceuticals to radioisotopes for industry and emerging technologies.

Job Description The Health Physics Supervisor will assist in the management of the MURR Radiation Safety Program and the Health Physics Technician staff. The program and staff exist to protect university staff, students, the public, and the environment from the potential hazards associated with the use of radiation and to ensure compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and procedures.

This includes management responsibilities for a staff of <10 health physics technicians with a variety of health physics related responsibilities. The position will directly report to the Health Physics and Safety Manager and will have responsibilities to communicate effectively both up and down the organizational chart.

As part of MURR’s Health and Safety Team, this position has responsibility for oversight of MURR’s Health Physics Technician group including:

    Allocation of department assets (Tech Staff, detection equipment, other tools) to support research, production, and operation while managing competing priorities.Direct supervision of staff responsible for: Radiation and contamination surveys, environmental monitoring, instrument calibration, ALARA planning, radioactive shipping, dosimetry and bioassay analysis, radioactive waste disposal, and other health physics dutiesSupervision of personnel with a focus on performance excellence and resolution of employee conflicts and concerns as needed.Ensure regulatory compliance with dosimetry reporting, radiation worker training, and facility surveys are complete and accurate.
  • Advise faculty, staff, and students regarding radiation safety of proposed projects which includes the performance of safety evaluations documented through written reports.
  • Scheduling personnel to cover work activities within the health physics group.
  • Clear communication of technical Health Physics information, concepts, and ideas verbally and in writing to a variety of staff with multiple education backgrounds.Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and administrative controls to ensure compliance with appropriate regulations and safety concerns.Executes and enhances the facility ALARA program and utilizes historical dosimetry records to track/trend personnel exposures in order to promptly address concerns.Serves as a member of the Facility Emergency Organization.Attends meetings and communicates needs of the health physics team to other groups.

Salary Range: $65,000 - $85,000

GGS Grade: MKT

Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications Health Physics related educational background

Experience working with a variety of radioactive materials and hazards levels

Previous supervisory experience.
