Organizational Unit Overview:

Geological Sciences is an academic department within the College of Arts and Sciences. The mission of the department is to produce graduates with BS and MS degrees in geology, and to successfully carry out a range of research projects, both funded and unfunded.

Job Duties :

Coordinate department vehicle maintenance, and design vehicle modifications where necessary.

Design, specify, implement, maintain, and construct field sampling systems including water sampling systems, groundwater observation systems, core sampling systems, geophysical systems.

Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, operate and train users of analytical equipment including but not limited to: particle size instruments, carbon analyzer, X-Ray diffractometer, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, UV-visible spectrophotometer, magnetic separators, etc.

Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain petrographic, geochemical, and sedimentological sample preparation equipment. Train students and faculty in equipment use.

Facilitate optimization of computer lab; facilitate and coordinate with ITCS on
funding; install and administer file servers; specify and obtain computer software; assist faculty in maintaining computers.

Coordinate, working with the departmental administrator, maintenance of the departmental website. Maintain, catalog, and display departmental specimen collections.

Implement lab safety requirements; maintain an up-to-date inventory of chemicals, with use protocols and MSDS information; assist faculty and students in maintaining safe and compliant environments in their labs. Implement building safety requirements; administer departmental safe driver training program.

Pilot Boats; implement marine sampling and surveying systems; coordinate with boating safety department on design and maintenance of marine research systems such as deck equipment, sampling, and surveying equipment, and boat safety equipment and procedures. Advise faculty and students in the proper storage of research specimens and cores.

Supervise work of graduate and undergraduate student employees. General department support functions, such as interfacing with other entities within and outside of the university to advance department objectives and needs. Other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience:

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation:


Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Skill with mechanical trades, experience with and understanding of scientific apparatus such as microscopes, analytical equipment and procedures, sample processing equipment and procedures, positioning and geolocating systems, boats, field sampling procedures including drilling and geophysical techniques, computer networking and computers, electronics, and education in geological or marine sciences.

License or Certification required by the Department:
