    The Biology Department at Washington and Jefferson College invites applications for Adjunct Instructor position for the Fall 2021 semester (only).

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Teach one lecture section (3.5 total hours per week meeting on campus with students) and one lab section (3.25 total hours per week meeting on campus with students). There may be additional student contact time depending on students' completion of lab work which will vary with the lab assignments each week and with lab prep.

    Instruction responsibilities include:

      Teach course concepts using PowerPoint and other modes of instruction. Help students to troubleshoot lab work in DNA and RNA isolation and handling, subcloning, qPCR, and bioinformatics approaches in the laboratory. Instructor is responsible for preparation of laboratory materials each week. Administer and grade lecture exams/assignments as well as lab assignments.
    Additional responsibilities include:

      Offer at least two office hours per week for student consultation'can be done in person or using conferencing software. Post all grades in a timely fashion to the College's classroom management system. It is essential to regularly check email and reply to emails from students, Biology faculty, College staff, and the Office of Academic Affairs.
    Qualifications

      Have experience independently executing and troubleshooting laboratory protocols in DNA and RNA handling, PCR, gel electrophoresis, subcloning and transformation, and qPCR. Experiments could be adapted based on candidate's expertise. Have a strong interest in working with undergraduate students. Have excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff. Must have the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
    Education

    Applicants should have earned an M.S. or Ph.D. in Biology with specific expertise in Molecular Biology or a related field. Applicants should have significant lab experience in their area of expertise.

    Working environment includes indoor work and outdoor work in a variety of weather/temperature conditions. Physical requirements include: standing, sitting, walking, running, bending, stooping, and reaching overhead.
