Laboratory Technologist I, Biomedical & Diagnostic Sciences - Temporary position

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants for a temporary Laboratory Technologist I position located in the Department of Biomedical & Diagnostic Sciences.  This position exists to provide technical support in the Pharmacology Laboratory by learning and performing routine procedures on clinical specimens in the course of diagnostic testing or clinical research for a wide range of clientele. The laboratory interacts with faculty, staff, and students within the UTCVM, as well as clinicians, residents, and researchers across the country, including many zoos and aquariums. The laboratory is a multifaceted environment involved in research, teaching and clinical service. The Lab Tech I also assists in writing Standard Operating Procedures, documents and troubleshoots problems that arise, focuses on quality assurance, and helps ensure that all equipment is maintained.

Typical Responsibilities

Performs a variety of routine procedures including solution preparation, sample extraction, integration of results, and statistical analysis.  Assists with development and validation of new protocols. Researches and validates new procedures for use in the lab. Conducts data base searches and literature reviews to obtain information on possible procedures for new assays conducted in the lab. Provides check-in and inventory of samples. Orders laboratory supplies.  Documents and troubleshoots problems that arise.  Focuses on quality assurance.  Assists with maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

Knowledge of basic chemistry.  Ability to establish and identify laboratory findings.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.  Ability to perform testing procedures on various clinical specimens.  Ability to adhere to safety procedures.  Effective verbal and written communication skills.  Excellent computer skills. Ability to work with moderate supervision. The ability to multitask and manage multiple ongoing projects at one time.  Ability to pay close attention to detail. Ability to organize and prioritize.

Minimum Qualifications:

This is an entry level position.  Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry a related field or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.
