Lab and Research Technician 2 employees provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in increasingly complex scientific experiments. May handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab and Research Technician 2 employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

The Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia is hiring a Laboratory Technician in the Erisir Lab.

Experience in one or more of these areas is strongly preferred. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

·Provide support for the ongoing daily operation of a Systems-Level Neuroscience lab

·Assist with the technical aspects of the research project that examines the central nervous system development and plasticity of the visual and taste systems.

·Responsible for genetic, histological, and ultrastructural analyses and data analysis/computer aided image analysis of central nervous system tissues

·Responsible for the breeding and maintenance of animal colonies of mammalian species

·Will be trained in electron microscopy tissue preparation techniques.

·Maintain lab supplies and equipment.

·In addition to the above, other duties may be assigned.

This full-time position will remain open until filled.

This is a restricted position contingent on continued funding.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Associate's degree. Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred.

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Experience Preferred: Lab animal or veterinary handling experience. Basic understanding of biology (e.g., molecular, cellular and systems) and chemistry (e.g., Molarity and dilutions). Fine finger manipulation and dexterity, the ability to handle tissue and devices used in standard biology labs. Experience in Excel and Word. Preferred BA or BS in Biology, Chemistry, or Neuroscience or other majors with an emphasis in neuroscience. Preferred lab tech experience with animal breeding and genotyping. We are also highly interested in someone with electron microscope experience.

Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
