General Description of the Job Class


Perform a vari ety of tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of diagnos tic, therapeutic and life

support clinical equipment. Biomedical E quipment Specialists can pursue one ofthe following tracks:

-Senior Technician- Serves in a generalist capacity, with broad knowled ge of all types of equipment.

Responsible for coordina ting special projects, managing implementation of equipment installation s, etc.)

-Specialty Technician- Serves as a subject matter expert on one or more specific types of equipment. Would be

the expert re source for that equipment.

-Team Leader- Provides support to manag ement team by monitoring time off/schedules, ensuring team

complia nce with policy and procedure, coordinating team meetings, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level


Kn owledgeable and able to perform all duties and responsibilities of Biome dical Equipment Technician.

Senior Technicians and Specialty Techn icians are responsible for the following:


-Consistentl y perform a variety of routine, complex and specialized tasks associated with the installation,

maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of clinical equipment and systems, including life support equipment.</p >


-May be required to specialize on various types or syste ms of clinical equipment at this level, requiring specific

training and / or certification.


-Provide guidance and mentor ing to Biomedical Equipment Techs May be required to be a technical reso urce to

clinical staff concerning patient interface issues.


-Coordinate inspection and installation of incoming equipmen t as required


-May be asked to assist with developing specifications for equipment purchases.


-May be requir ed to coordinate the work performed by service contractors and vendors to include maintenance,

calibration, installation and verification of service documentation.


-Conduct departmental traini ng sessions as required covering safe operation and maintenance of equip ment for

Biomedical Equipment Techs


-Independent ly coordinate and manage projects, both routine and complex, from start to completion, performing

any necessary communication and follow- up with construction and clinical departments.

-Examples of devices assigned for maintenance are: Intra-Aor tic Balloon pumps, Left Ventricular assist devices,

Co mplex monitoring systems including knowledge of network architecture, Sp ecialized systems such as Anesthesia, Dialysis, sterilization</spa n>


Team Leaders provide managerial support, by perform ing the following tasks:

-Approve / disapprove PTO time and send to Operations Manager


-Monitor completion of Preventive and Corrective Maintenance to department standards


-Monitor technician productivity


-Monitor the dai ly work load of technicians and assign/ reassign work as necessary.

-Assign Preventive Maintenance actions to technicians on a monthly basis.


-Collaborate with different department s to resolve issues and improve workflow processes within the depa rtment.


-Assist in performing competency assess ments


-Monitor cleanliness of work spaces and adherenc e to infection control procedures and use of PPE


-Ensu re parts are received into system accurately


-Monitor adherence to parts ordering process


-Assist in validat ing inspection procedures


-Assist Operations Manager i n developingdepartmental training plan


-Provide input regarding performance of team members


-Other projects and duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


All of Biomedical Equipment Technician, plus the f ollowing:


Ability to coordinate complex projects and p rioritize tasks.


Ability to work without direct superv ision.


Significant knowledge of Duke University Health System and departmental policies and procedures.


Possesses advanced knowledge of codes, standards and compliance issues relating to the Clinical Engineering profession.</p >


Advanced knowledge of the safety precautions applicable to the operation and maintenance of clinical equipment.


Possesses intermediate knowledge of internet protocols an d networked systems.


Abilit y to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively


Ability to provide coaching and mentoring to Level I and II tec hnicians.



Minimum Qualifications


Education

Associates Degree in Electronics or Biomedical Equipment Technology or Military specific medical equipment repair certification is required. Two years of military training in electronics or vocational training in electronics may substitute for the degree requirement.


Experience

A minimum of five years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment experience. Technician. CBET or CLES certification may substitute for two years of


Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

A valid North Carolina driver's license with a good driving record. Qualify as a candidate for certification as a CBET or CLES by AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation)

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929.
