Department Description:

The Division of Infectious Diseases conducts investigator initiated, industry funded, NIH Funded AIDS prevention and treatment, sexually transmitted infections, other infectious disease scientific and clinical research, and provides patient care at UNC-Chapel Hill and at sites throughout the world. The University of North Carolina’s Global HIV Prevention and Treatment Clinical Trials Unit is dedicated to developing and conducting research of HIV prevention, HIV infection, HIV associated opportunistic infections and complications of HIV therapy, as well as conducting research in other infectious diseases.

Position Description:


The Research Assistant’s primary responsibility will be to provide administrative and clinical support to Investigators of Record, the Research Coordinator(s), and other research team members in their work. This position will also be responsible for data and specimen collection and shipment, maintenance of electronic and paper-based research records and regulatory documents in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations, as well as GCP. In addition, to this, the Research Assistant will assist other support staff in phone screening potential participants for the Unit’s various HIV Prevention, Treatment and Cure Research Studies. The Research Assistant may work at offsite research locations in Greensboro and Raleigh (in addition to UNC-CH) throughout the workweek. This position may also be responsible for other duties as assigned. These duties include preparing and scheduling participant visits, performing evaluations within the scope of the position and general office administrative tasks. The Research Assistant will have limited responsibilities for community outreach and education.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Must have the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with volunteers, patients, families, staff physicians and sponsor representatives from diverse backgrounds and sexual & racial identities.

Must demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Must be able to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Instructions are given verbally and/or in writing.

Must have the ability to multitask and reorganize tasks according to multiple shifting priorities.

Must demonstrate the ability to maintain team, unit and university goals while meeting and exceeding individual work goals and have the ability to meticulously perform all study-related functions while maintaining a high level of organization.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and internet navigation.

Must be willing and able to commute to clinical research sites in Greensboro, Raleigh and Chapel Hill, NC. Travel to community-based settings in Durham and Raleigh from UNC-CH office location may also be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience with target populations and/or community health/outreach experience preferred.

Completed phlebotomy training is preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

Valid driver’s license is required
