Overview

The University Center for Human Values (UCHV) fosters ongoing inquiry into important ethical issues in private and public life and supports teaching, research, and discussion of ethics and human values throughout the curriculum and across the disciplines at Princeton University. An important component of UCHV’s work are the many events that highlight the scholarship of UCHV’s community and engage with the university at large.

The UCHV seeks a highly organized individual to plan and executive the Center’s signature events, most notably the Tanner Lectures on Human Values and the James A. Moffett ’29 Lectures in Ethics. In addition, the Event and Communications Specialist will oversee UCHV’s one-time special events, workshops,and seminars, working closely with UCHV’s faculty, visitors, and postdocs. This individual serves as the main administrator for the Center’s weekly Laurance S. Rockefeller lunch seminars (a cornerstone of UCHV’s programming) as well as for the Political Theory Graduate Research Seminar, and the Social Criticism and Political Thought series. Additionally, the Events and Communications Specialist will maintain and update the Center’s overarching calendar.

In addition to events management, the Event and Communications Specialist will produce and oversee UCHV’s communications for an external audience. They will write and publicize stories, interviews, and event recaps for a wide audience. Specific projects will include producing the UCHV’s Annual Report, writing and posting faculty news items, and compiling the Center’s weekly digital newsletter (featuring upcoming events).

This is a permanent, 10-month position working during the academic year. Candidates must be willing and able to adjust their schedule to accommodate evening hours for special events determined well in advance. A writing sample is required as part of the application process and should be attached to your profile as an additional document.



Responsibilities

Event Management:

  • Plan and execute the Tanner Lectures on Human Values and the James A. Moffett ’29 Lectures in Ethics.
  • Support the Tanner Lectures committee, including serving as its secretary, organizing and coordinating annual lectures and dinners, and producing annual reports for the Tanner Foundation.
  • Oversee all logistics for special events, workshops and seminars including creating planning budgets and facilitating room bookings, travel, catering, advertising, and technology set-up.
  • Administer UCHV’s weekly seminars (oversee logistics such as advertising, catering and tech).
UCHV Communications:

  • Compile and send UCHV’s weekly newsletter.
  • Design, edit, and produce print publications, including the Center’s Annual Report.
  • Design and send digital event announcements in Mailchimp.
  • Compile and send UCHV’s weekly newsletter.
  • Design, edit, and produce print publications, including the Center’s Annual Report.
  • Write faculty news items and post to UCHV's website.
  • Write and publicize stories, interviews, and event recaps for a wide audience.
UCHV Administration:

  • Maintain Center’s email listservs, updating yearly and on an as-needed basis.
  • Maintain Center-wide calendars with a high degree of attention to detail.
  • Assist UCHV’s Assistant Director and Director as needed.


Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Familiarity/comfort with Mailchimp or similar email platforms.
  • 3-5 years of related experience in events or related administrative work.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft, PRIME, Concur, as well as all Microsoft Office applications.
  • The ideal candidate will have a background in communications or marketing.
Required:

  • Successful track record of managing special events.
  • Exceptional writing and copy editing skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently with careful attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written and orally). This position interacts directly with many highly regarded academics from both Princeton and other universities and is accountable for consistently upholding the University Center’s reputation and high level of excellence.
