Position Summary:

Under general supervision, perform journey-level work in the installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel, and repair of mechanical-electrical equipment and fixtures; and perform all other related work as required. This position is required to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and/or replace and test electrical systems; assemble, install and repair wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, fixtures, etc. using hand tools and power tools. Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspect related work performed by contractors; estimate cost, time, and materials for electrical projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of an electrical shop; clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENCY; OR DEMONSTRATED POSSESSION OF THE COMPETENCIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE WORK. SOME POSITIONS MAY REQUIRE SPECIAL LICENSES OR CERTIFICATION. OPTIONAL GUIDELINES: EXPERIENCE IN THE TRADE AREA RELATED TO THE AREA OF ASSIGNMENT MAY BE SUBSTITUTED ON A YEAR-FOR-YEAR BASIS.

Must have a valid NC license.

Key Responsibility:

Maintains, repairs, and installs electrical and electronic wiring and related fixtures and components.

Essential Tasks:

Complete and document work requests in a timely manner. Review work orders assigned and prioritize work. Performs routine tasks, checks work for accuracy before completion of tasks. This position is required to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and/or replace and test electrical systems. Review, plans, layout, and installation of electrical and electronic wiring, equipment, and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes. Make recommendations and comments relevant to current trends and potential energy savings. Provide preliminary cost estimates for materials and services for facilities renovations projects and new construction. Perform duties such as maintaining records, and files, preparing reports, and ordering supplies and equipment for routine facilities maintenance.

Perform tasks with the proper use of personal protection equipment; diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools to provide viable repairs and or solutions. Make recommendations and advises management of potential safety hazards. Inspect systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with national, state, and local codes and requirements. Test systems, equipment, and fixtures, using test devices to ensure compatibility and safety of system.

Develops and maintains strong relationships with students, staff, faculty, contractors, and other campus partners by listening and understanding, and responding to identified needs. Interacts with customers clearly and concisely to convey information. Responds to various work orders involving electrical systems in the residence halls as well as other systems including but not limited to plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, carpentry, etc. Staff will be courteous at all times.
