General Summary of Position:

The Assistant/Associate AD for Sports Medicine and Performance oversees a multidisciplinary team within the athletic department that develops best practices and a holistic department to oversee UMass Lowell’s student-athlete’s physical and mental health. This position also provides leadership in all aspects of athletic training, sports performance, and mental health. The position would also coordinate risk management and injury prevention efforts for all student-athletes.

Essential Job Duties:
1. Responsible for the organization and administration of a comprehensive Division I athletic healthcare program, program, including, but limited to, injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, and educational programs for student-athletes (regarding nutrition, mental health, injury prevention, and holistic healthcare).

2. Provide supervision and mentoring of athletics training staff and coordination and management of the overall Healthcare Team consisting of general practitioners, orthopedic specialists, physical therapists, mental health counselor, and nutritionist.

3. Consults with physicians, physical therapists, and outside medical providers on injuries and treatment plans while communicating action plans with student-athletes, coaches and Sports Performance staff as appropriate while ensuring compliance with NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations.

4. Develop departmental policies and procedures regarding emergency management, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries in compliance with NCAA and other governing regulations as well as enforce conference policies for environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, heat index, lightning, and other extreme weather situation for events and practices.

5. Coordinate the tracking and filing of medical billing and insurance, while maintaining accurate and current injury and treatment records of all sport teams.

6. Serve as principal athletic trainer for selected team (s) including attendance at scheduled team practices and home/away competitions as necessary.

7. Collaborate with Asst. AD for Sports Performance to plan and implement strategies for a unified approach to health, wellness, rehabilitation and performance of the student-athletes; includes collaborative oversight of mental health and nutrition.

8. Key representative and liaison with all health and wellness matters with University and Conference committees

9. Responsible for the overall fiscal management of the Athletic Healthcare Department . This includes oversight of the purchasing of healthcare training supplies, monitoring inventory and healthcare needs, and proper maintenance of equipment.

Other Job Duties:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Occasional overnight travel.
  • Working Conditions:

    • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary.

    Minimum Qualifications (Required):


    • Master’s degree Exercise Science/Physiology or closely related field


  • Must have and maintain N.A.T.A. (National Athletic Trainers Association) certification
  • Must have and maintain Professional Rescuer C.P.R. (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) certification
  • Must meet requirements to obtain and maintain a Massachusetts State license for athletic trainers
  • Experience:

    • For Assistant AD level, will need to meet the minimum of 5 years of full-time athletic training experience and administrative work with a healthcare department. Experience as a head trainer is preferred
    • For Associate AD level, will need to meet the minimum of 7 years as a full-time athletic training experience and direct oversight of a healthcare/sports medicine department. Experience as a head trainer is required
