General Summary of Position:

This position is responsible for oversight of the Research & Academic Biological Safety Programs designed to insure the safe use of biological materials in laboratory operations. Responsible for campus wide biological compliance and oversight of implementing policies and procedures and to developing new campus standards and regulations that adhere to federal, state, and municipal regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); the Centers for Disease Control (CDC); the United States Department of Agriculture, (USDA); and the National Institute of Health, (NIH), National Institute of Occupational Standards (NIOSH). Responsibilities include the design and implementation of a comprehensive biosafety program; management of biosafety projects, refinement of existing programs; development/implementation of a biosafety laboratory assessment program and emergency response planning. The Hazardous Materials Manager/Biosafety Officer follows departmental policies and procedures in the development and implementation of programs and works under the general direction of the Director of Environmental Health & Safety. Additionally, this position is responsible for the oversight and operations of programs related to the Hazardous Materials Receiving Stockroom. This includes the management of staff to ensure the acceptance, inventory, disbursement of hazardous products (chemical, biological, radiological) and related supplies. Additionally, the position will also be responsible for the oversight of programs for the collection and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste products. Finally, the position will serve as an active emergency responder for hazardous materials, bodily fluid and environmental releases.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in an area related to microbiology or biological sciences, or environmental health and safety and seven years of experience in health and safety in a biological research or biological laboratory environment.
  • Experience working and providing a compliant bio safety program applicable to BSL-1 - 2
  • If not certified as a hazardous materials responder, must successfully complete training courses within 120 days of employment.
  • Availability and ability to remain on call 7/24 in cases of emergency.

Must have a valid Driver’s License and a willingness to drive between campuses and to off campus assignments.

Additional Considerations:

  • Self-starter and goal orientated
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Previous experience working with an academic institution, or healthcare facility desirable
  • Previous Experience developing policy and implementing procedures for highly specialized Science and Engineering Buildings, laboratories and research operations
  • Professional experience in a highly dynamic higher education environment
  • Experience working with unionized trade environments

Preferred Qualifications:
