The School of Information (I School) advances knowledge and practice everywhere humans interact with digital technologies. Through interdisciplinary research and teaching we are committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility while preserving security and privacy. Our faculty conduct research in human-computer interaction (HCI), security and privacy, applied data science, and technology in developing regions.
We currently offer three professional master's degrees and an academic doctoral degree. Our Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) program trains students for careers as information professionals and emphasizes project-based learning. Our Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) program is an online degree designed for working professionals with career goals in the emerging field of data science. The newly launched Master of Information and Cybersecurity (MICS), also offered online, offers a holistic approach to cybersecurity and prepares students for professional careers in cybersecurity. Our Ph.D. program equips scholars to develop solutions and shape policies that influence how people seek, use, and share information.
The I School is home to several important centers, including the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC), the Center for Technology, Society and Policy (CTSP) and the BioSENSE Lab. The CLTC was established in 2015 with a $15M grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to support the building of a new field of cybersecurity research that is multi-disciplinary and global in scope. CTSP is a multidisciplinary research and design/build center focused on emergent social and policy issues of technology. The BioSENSE Lab is a socio-physiological computing initiative that brings together a multi-disciplinary team to work on the future of biosensing and bio signaling.
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) holds a key leadership role within the I School, tasked with strategy development for, and oversight and management of, all fundraising activities for the School of Information. Working closely with the Head of School, establishes a strategic plan for meeting annual fundraising goals that will include meeting with both individual and corporate donors. The CDO role currently manages 1.5 full-time fundraisers and in turn reports to the most senior administrator of the School. The CDO will have a dotted line to the AVC-Constituent Programs, University Development & Alumni Relations (UDAR).
60% Fundraising: Serves as the lead development professional and manages a comprehensive fundraising program for the I School. Leading the School's professional fundraising staff, this position conceives, implements and manages fundraising programs and strategies to successfully meet predetermined goals and objectives. This includes oversight and management of identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors and donor prospects in collaboration with UDAR. Presents formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects or prepares senior management for the presentation of proposals. Manages own portfolio of 50-60 prospects of major and principal gifts. Oversees, and maintains a small portfolio of corporate and foundation prospects. Serves on the Campaign Management Team. Upholds University policies regarding managing prospects. Oversees the prospect portfolio of each of the fundraising staff. Supervises gift administration and donor stewardship.
25% Management: Selects, trains, leads, directs, and motivates a team of professional fundraising staff). Guides, directs, and manages staff charged with fundraising and identifying, building, nurturing and maintaining effective relationships with external constituencies. Takes corrective action as necessary. Collaborates, trains and staffs I School faculty leadership at the I School on cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors. This includes providing prospects briefings and accompanying the head of school and other faculty leadership on donor visits. Recruits, trains, nurtures and manages a cohort of alumni volunteers committed to the philanthropic success of School of Information. Oversees the work of professional and support staff. This includes leading, directing, and motivating staff, and taking corrective action as necessary.
15% Strategic Planning: Analyzes needs and creates strategic and long-range plans for fundraising at the School of Information. Develops, creates, writes, implements, and / or evaluates individualized marketing plans and / or strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, gift planning or corporate / foundation prospects (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation). Strategic decisions and results have a major impact on the overall goals of the / program.
- A minimum of eight years as a front line fundraiser with Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Expert level experience developing strategies for donor identification, cultivation and solicitation.
- Expert knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
- Expert oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.
- Expert organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills. Expert project / program management skills, including skills in setting and meeting program / project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
- Expert level skills in maintaining confidentiality.
- Experience developing benchmarks and using metrics to evaluate fundraising success.
- Expert knowledge of management/leadership concepts, principles and best practices.
- Expert level strategic planning skills and skills to conceive, design, impletment, evaluate and manage fundraising programs' and strategies.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Strong knowledge of the School of Information and the Berkeley campus, their achievements, vision, missions, goals, objectives, applicable policies, infrastructure, and current issues of concern.
