About Eastern Washington University:

Eastern also offers program throughout the state based on the needs of the community. Eastern offers an array of bachelor’s and master’s degrees and one applied doctorate in physical therapy. EWU offers 135 fields of study, 9 master’s degrees, 12 graduate certificates, 39 graduate programs, 1 educational specialist degree, and 1 applied doctorate to more than 10,000 enrolled students.


Job Summary:
We are currently seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for the following position: Coordinator - Intramural Sports

The Coordinator for Intramural Sports (CIMS) reports to the Associate Director for Campus Recreation (ADCR), serves as a member of the Campus Recreation team, and will assume primary responsibility for planning, operation, and evaluation of Intramural (I.M.) Sports. As a leader within Student Affairs and the university, the CIMS models EWU's values and mission. I.M. Sports is a $140,000 program, which includes the management of approximately 15-20 seasonal sports leagues, and 6-10 special events throughout the academic year. The program focuses on providing extracurricular engagement through quality sports programs. The program serves over 1500 students, staff, and faculty annually.
Administrative: Under the guidance of the ACDR, the CIMS plays a leading role in defining and achieving I.M. Sports program goals. For over 30 years, the I.M. Sports program has been one of the most popular programs at EWU (1,500+ unique participants per year). The program's past successes are attributed to thorough officials training, dependable program quality, and student centric community traditions. The CIMS is expected to translate program success into regular qualitative and quantitative reports. The I.M. Sports program adheres to Campus Recreation's core values, which include:

  • Risk Management: The CIMS is responsible for managing all perceived and actual risks associated with sports programs. This is accomplished through staff training, conducting facility audits, preparation of first aid staff, and promoting positive sportsmanship.
  • Inclusion: All EWU students should be welcomed within the I.M. sports program, and their diversity should be reflected in the program's staff, programs offered, and policy development. This includes developing new programs that emphasize accessibility and leverage new technology.
  • Professionalism: The I.M. Sports program should aspire to achieve the highest possible quality in each event. All students should receive proper training to be successful in their roles.
  • Stewardship: The I.M. Sports program should continually promote EWU's brand, and foster a strong campus community through sportsmanship.

Field: The CIMS is expected to work regular afternoons and evenings, and occasional weekends. The position conducts hiring, training, direct supervision, and on-sight evaluation of 15+ student staff. The position adapts league schedules based on evolving weather conditions. The CIMS meets regularly with program partners, including recreation facilities staff.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor ’s degree in recreation management, physical education, exercise science, or closely related field
  • 2 years of leadership experience managing adult sports programs, including league or tournament management experience
  • Experience implementing officials trainings, with working knowledge of risk management standards and practices in Intramural Sports programming
  • Experience maintaining sports league equipment inventory
  • Experience with recreation/league management software (IM Leagues, Fusion, etc.)
  • Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in recreation management, physical education, exercise science, or closely related field
  • Current instructor certification for CPR and First Aid
  • Experience working as a club, high school, or collegiate sports official in any of the following: volleyball, basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, or other emerging sports
  • Experience directly implementing an officials training in at least 3 of the following sports: volleyball, basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, or other emerging sports
  • Experience with developing formal program assessment, student learning outcomes, and quarterly/annual program reports
  • Bilingual; ability to speak English and Spanish
  • Current Wilderness First Responder certification
  • Experience facilitating outdoor leadership programming
  • Experience developing adaptive sports, para sports, unified sports, and/or eSports

  • Process staff timesheets on time each pay period

  • Connect with student participants in the field to receive their feedback and strengthen community

  • Develop new adaptive, eSports leagues and tournaments

Conditions of Employment:
Special Note: This position, during the course of university employment, will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value. The position may involve unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults and children under the age of 16. Successful applicants will be required to pass a background check prior to beginning employment and show proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. pursuant to federal immigration laws.

Additionally, this position is expected to maintain a current certification in CPR and First Aid throughout their term of employment. CPR and First Aid certification must be obtained within first 4 months of hire.
  • This position is expected to work regular afternoons and evenings, and occasional weekends, to be scheduled in advance through adjustment of hours for the applicable week. While this position is eligible for overtime/comp time, all such additional time must be approved before the overtime is worked.

This position is covered by the Washington Federation of State Employees’ Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Salary Information: $40,308 - $52,476
