The Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, or KIPAC, was inaugurated in 2003 as an independent laboratory of Stanford University to serve as a bridge between the disciplines of astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics. KIPAC's members work in the Physics and Applied Physics Departments on the Stanford campus and at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Its mission is to bring the resources of modern computational, experimental, observational and theoretical science to bear on our understanding of the universe at large.

POSITION SUMMARY:

KIPAC is seeking a Physical Science Research Scientist to join our team exploring the study of extrasolar planets and assist in the development of the Gemini Planet Imager and planning scientific use of the Roman space telescope. You will carry out simulations of exoplanet spectroscopy, develop realistic noise models for spectrographs and develop a framework for distinguishing planets from stars using Python code. You will also support undergraduate student researchers. You will assist in preparation of papers for publication and scientific and program reporting by providing data in support of research. This is a 12-month fixed term position.

CORE DUTIES:
  • Design, recommend and implement modifications to procedures and protocols in support of research projects.
  • Partner with faculty in support of students to teach/demonstrate processes of experiments and the safe operation of equipment.
  • Manage lab safety to protect personnel and environment. Develop the setup and operational procedures of lab equipment, using knowledge of chemicals and other hazards to minimize the likelihood of chemical exposure and/or other hazards. Liaison with EH&S to request services and support for lab operations.
  • Analyze and interpret research data to recognize irregularities and invalid results. Develop statistical models allowing for integration and display of data. Make recommendations based on results.
  • Assist in preparation of papers for publication and scientific and program reporting by providing data in support of research.
  • Perform technical procedures, such as running and calibrating of equipment, to gather data and optimize outcome of results in support of a research project.
  • Modify research protocols and procedures based on new learnings from literature review and attendance at scientific conferences.
  • Train personnel to ensure safe operation of lab.
  • Python simulations of the Gemini and WFIRST coronagraph/spectrographs.


OPTIONAL: Please note that due to current COVID-19 safety measures, our office is working fully remote through Spring 2021. Once COVID-19 safety measures are no longer applicable, this position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting, subject to satisfactory job performance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Physics and knowledge of astrophysics. Experience carrying out research

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of extrasolar planet and stellar properties.
  • Python coding.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
