The Grounds Specialist performs groundskeeper duties to assist in the overall landscaping plan of the college locations. This position is responsible for the care of trees, shrubs, plants, lawns, landscaping beds and parking lot maintenance. Provides snow related removal with appropriate equipment. Assists in the preventative maintenance for critical assets in the facilities area, as needed.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES included the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Under limited supervisor, use necessary equipment to maintain trees, shrubs and plants, as related to the college’s overall landscaping plan.
  • Operate sweepers in cleaning drives, walks and parking lots.
  • Maintain grounds equipment, warehouse lift truck, and college vehicles.
  • Remove snow and ice from driveways, parking lots, sidewalks and other campus areas.
  • Provide miscellaneous assistance for repair of campus facilities during peak times
  • Clean manholes and catch basins.
  • Schedule watering of lawns and plants.
  • Pick up debris from site.
  • Other duties as assigned by administrative supervisor including assisting other facilities staff during peak times.
  • Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College’s beliefs, values, mission and vision and be evaluated by same.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThis position has no supervisory responsibilities.

    CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:

    Internal: Daily contact with department personnel. Regular contact with staff from other departments in service provider capacity.

    External: Contact with students in service provider capacity.

    Education and Experience

    Required:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Two (2) years of related experience.
  • Valid Michigan Drivers license with no restrictions
  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within 6 months of employment.
  • Other Skills and Abilities

    Ability to troubleshoot and execute solutions from start to finish. Ability to present a positive image of the college and the Facilities Department in relationship with others and in one’s personal habits. Cooperative personality to be able to function with team members. Neatness in one’s personal habits and dress in accordance with tasks. Capable of using the computerized Summit Tracer Trane control system. The position may require flexible work hours.

    Language Skills

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, blueprints, specifications, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Founded as Jackson Junior College in 1928, the College operated as a division of the public Jackson Union School District and was located near the high school in downtown Jackson, Mich. In 1962, Jackson County voters created Jackson Community College as a distinct entity; and in 1964, they passed a charter millage that still helps to fund the College today. Rapid enrollment and program growth in the 1960s spurred construction of a new campus on its present site. In 2013, in light of the College’s decision to begin development of curriculum for bachelor’s degree programs and increased efforts in international studies, the Board of Trustees voted to change the name to Jackson College.

    Today, the College owns more than 500 acres and sits on a scenic rural site six miles south of the city of Jackson, and also operates Jackson College @ LISD TECH in Adrian, Clyde E. LeTarte Center, Hillsdale, and W.J. In an effort to increase the affinity group’s effectiveness, the College is hiring a part-time liaison for each group. There are five affinity groups: Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/African American, Pakistani, and Indian.
