Collaborative Pianist

Job description


The Department of Music at Smith College invites applications for a three-year, benefits eligible faculty position for a Collaborative Pianist to September 1, 2021. We seek an accomplished musician with substantial experience and a strong record of artistic collaboration, knowledge of a variety of musical styles, and the qualifications to teach music courses at the undergraduate level. Applicants must be in possession of a master’s degree or, alternatively, a bachelor’s degree and extensive professional experience. Candidates from groups underrepresented in academia are encouraged to apply. This non-tenure track faculty position is renewable every three years, subject to the needs of the College and job performance reviews. The Collaborative Pianist is a voting member of the faculty. The Music Department serves music majors and minors, as well as the rest of the student population of the College, for which music is a valuable component of a liberal arts education.


-Fifteen hours per week will be spent in performance course lessons working primarily with the vocal faculty, but also with instrumental teachers. Additional time will be made available for students to work with the Collaborative Pianist in one-to-one rehearsals and coachings.

-Performing with students in group and individual recitals each semester.

-Two sections per week of musicianship labs, in support of the department’s level one and level two theory courses held in consecutive semesters—level one in the fall and level two in the spring.

-Develop new courses for our piano lab, along the lines of a group piano class for keyboard beginners.

-We seek a pianist with knowledge and a high level of expertise working in a variety of musical styles as the Collaborative Pianist will take on a small class, not more than four students taught one-to-one, working in styles other than “Classical”.

-The Collaborative Pianist may be called upon to perform with faculty and other performers as part of the artistic programming of the department.

-Contributing to the administration of the Department and the College through participation in meetings, auditions, committees, recruitment activities, program reviews, and other events.
