Job Description:

Employee should be very familiar with concepts, practices, and procedures in weed science and plant management, but knowledge of aquatic plant management and research is preferred. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected as the development of novel research methods and protocols to address research questions is expected. Likewise, the successful candidate must be very familiar with experimental design, statistical analyses, and generation of deliverables. This position must be able to perform a variety of complicated tasks in a timely fashion. A strong background in botany, plant taxonomy, plant physiology, weed science, and statistics is required. This position will serve as a manager of research team efforts to ensure high work quality which includes directing tasks of graduate student, hourly, and full-time employees. Must be able to instruct students in research methods, procedures, and laboratory safety techniques in corroboration with the Principle Investigator. Ensuring that all projects stay on-task to meet deadlines and project deliverables is key in this position. The ability to tow and back trailers as well as to launch, load, and operate boats by oneself is also required.

This position requires familiarity capabilities in aquatic plant and algae cultivation, routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, and evaluation/acquisition of new supplies, technologies and equipment to enhance research capabilities. Furthermore, the maintenance of accurate laboratory records including research methods, procedures, and results is required.

The successful candidate will work with the supervisor in reviewing proposals, reports, protocols, and publications. In addition, this position is expected to co-author research findings through technical reports, journal articles, abstracts, posters, and presentations.

Expected Salary:

$44,700 - $58,900 or commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and thirteen years of relevant experience; Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and eleven years of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and eight years of relevant experience..

Preferred Qualifications:

Must be familiar with plant culture in greenhouse, mesocosms, and field environments.

Written and oral scientific communication. Candidates must have demonstrated experience delivering presentations and posters at professional conferences as well as publication in peer-reviewed literature.

Experience in boat and airboat operation and maintenance. The ability to diagnose and repair mechanical issues is required.

Experience with pesticide storage, handling, and application across multiple equipment types (hand-held booms, tractor-, ATV-, and boat-mounted sprayers, etc.).

Experimental design and statistical analysis experience in weed science research. Must be capable of creating research protocols which utilize appropriate experimental design and statistics. Also, proficiency in R programming language is required.

Experience managing laboratory operations such as hazardous waste, meeting various compliance requirements, managing noxious weed permits, supplies inventory, etc.

Safe Boating and FWC or US Army Corps of Engineer Airboat operator certificates are desired.

Prior experience working as a member of a weed science research team is desired.

Laboratory experience dealing with pesticide quantification (HPLC, GC/MS, etc.) and physiology (radiolabeled herbicides).

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Florida pesticide applicator’s license and experience applying restricted-use and experimental-use pesticides.

This is a time-limited position.

This position will require the applicant to obtain and maintain a license as an aquatic restricted-use pesticide applicator. The successful candidate must also obtain and maintain a US Army Corps of Engineers airboat operator certificate
