Minimum Salary: $76,272.38 per year
Maximum Salary: $141,408.19 per year (maximum entry $100,078.42 per year)

The Counseling and Advising department provide a wide range of support services and instruction to the general student population. The mission of the Advising and Counseling department is to foster and promote the academic, personal, and social development of students by providing a wide range of services to help them resolve personal difficulties and acquire the skills, attitudes, and knowledge that will enable them to be successful. The College seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty member in Counseling. The ideal candidate will share the College's commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomic diverse student population. The Porterville College Counseling and Advising department consists of experienced and professionally trained faculty who work with students concerning educational goals, career planning, student success strategies, transfer to four-year institutions, and other academic and personal issues affecting student success. The department includes Counselors who work as General Counselors and those who work in specialized services to targeted groups of students.
This position will provide leadership to targeted student cohorts, general student populations, participate on committee assignments and other academic and institute support activities. Counselors participate in planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses, and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. Counseling is an integral position to help students establish academic, personal, and career goals, which provides motivation to establish and stay on clear pathways to success. The Counselor provides expertise, initiative and leadership to design solutions and help students to overcome and/or remove whatever factors exist as barriers to their possible success in the areas of academic, vocational, or personal achievements and successfully plans for educational or career goals.
Under the Direction of the Dean of Student Success and Counseling or designee, the Counselor assists students to fulfill their maximum potential; assessing student learning outcomes; maintains a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their professional responsibilities; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with curriculum review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance. The candidate may be expected to provide teaching strategies for college success and career search related courses, depending on experience, background and institutional need. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, weekend outreach events and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the “open door” concept serving diverse student population.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide support for students for issues impacting retention, persistence, and academic success and referring students to resources as appropriate and necessary

follow department course outlines; keep accurate records of students' enrollment; attendance and progress, post and maintain office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college

Education and Experience:
Possession of a master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent (NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

A demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
• Higher education college counseling experience and developing student educational plans
• An understanding of the advantages and challenges of developing a quality counseling program in a rural community college
• Ability to work with students having a wide range of skills, motivation and academic or occupational goals
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching personal development, counseling and other related areas
• Ability and experience in using computer technology as a counseling/advising tool
• Knowledge and understanding of various counseling, student development theories and intervention strategies
• Experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
• Experience and expertise in culturally relevant/responsive counseling approaches as well as teaching in college success, career and personal development courses
• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within college success and career and personal development courses
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse faculty, staff and administration across the college to meet the needs of students
• Experience working, participating, and supporting Guided Pathways efforts
• Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices
• Experience with outreach to K-12, community and business partners
• Experience with online and other distance learning student services
• Experience with curriculum development
• Proficiency in the use of a variety of computer software and technology related to students and other educational services
• Ability to synthesize, analyze, and explain the organizational and student ecosystem as well as the student journey
• Ability and willingness to work effectively with community support groups, college committees, and other campus organizations and to be involved in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities
• Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment
