Position SummaryAs the health educator, the incumbent will be expected to use a variety of educational processes and strategies to improve health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors to promote the health and well-being of SDSU Intercollegiate student-athletes. The incumbent will assess campus health education needs, plan, and design programs, and implement programs and evaluate their effectiveness. This position plays a central role in informing the campus community about available health services and instructing individuals and groups in the basic principles of health and the optimal and proper utilization of health care services.As an athletic trainer, the incumbent assists in delivering athletic training services to Intercollegiate student-athletes in working to prevent athletic injuries by evaluating the student-athlete’s physical condition and establishing a proper conditioning program. When injuries do occur, this position serves as the first responder by recognizing and evaluating the injuries, and subsequently developing treatment and rehabilitation programs, incorporating the appropriate therapeutic modalities and use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment.For more information regarding the Athletics Department, click here.This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before 6/30/2022, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree or equivalent in an approved program in health education or a related health field. Equivalent of one to two years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in health education/sports medicine related area.Two or more years of intercollegiate experience in athletic training, particularly at the Division I level.Prior experience promoting health related quality of life of intercollegiate student-athletes relative to nutrition, substance abuse, disordered eating and/or weight management.Experience promoting health related quality of life of intercollegiate student-athletes relative to nutrition, substance abuse, disordered eating and/or weight management.Proficiency with Biodex, SwimEx, and Alter-G.Additional credentials of advance study in an athletic training related subject matter. Examples are: functional evaluation/rehabilitation, instrumented or manual soft tissue mobilization, Kinesiotape, etc.Experience as a certified athletic trainer in intercollegiate athletics.Computer skills in inventory, budget, and insurance.Specialized SkillsKnowledge of student-athletes general nutrition habit and resources to enhance nutrition patterns. Understanding of NCAA weight management policies. Knowledge of drug testing philosophy, program and intervention protocols as well as knowledge of screening nutrition supplements for possible banned substances. Ability to integrate various healthcare providers as needed for student-athlete with eating disorder.Compliance with all NCAA, conference, and San Diego State University rules, policies and procedures is of paramount importance to the university. All position responsibilities should be carried out in full compliance with all such rules and regulations.Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $4,583 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,060 - $7,836 per month.
