Position Summary

The International Travel Security Manager (ITSM) reports to the Associate Vice President of International Affairs and supports International Affairs and Business and Financial Affairs at San Diego State University (SDSU). Working in close collaboration with the staff of both offices, the ITSM proposes, develops, and coordinates policies, procedures, and activities that support the safety and well-being of SDSU students, researchers, faculty, and staff traveling abroad for study, research, or university business. The ITSM will develop and implement safety and security monitoring, analysis, and assessment; provide emergency response and support including a travel emergency preparedness plan; and provide global health and safety emergency response services for all SDSU global and regional travelers.

The successful candidate for this position will have substantial experience in global safety, security management, risk analytics, crisis management, emergency preparedness, project management, and communication skills. They will have a proven track record of sound judgment and decision-making, the ability to remain calm in crisis situations while handle matters confidentially, and exercise discretion with sensitive topics. They will be experienced in developing training materials and programs and have demonstrated leadership and organizational ability to balance conflicting interests, prioritizing assignments, and coordinate multiple projects and people simultaneously.

International Affairs is responsible for the coordination and development of international programs and services at San Diego State University including, but not limited to, faculty engagement, international research, international curriculum, international student services, study abroad, assessment, transborder programs, the SDSU Passport Office, and international alumni relations and development. International Affairs provides services that meet the diverse needs of the SDSU global community and offers programs that foster global perspectives and diplomacy, intercultural awareness, and international goodwill. International Affairs works with all areas of the university to identify and meet the unique needs of its constituencies and to provide opportunities for all members of the campus community to develop effective skills and perspectives for global citizenship and leadership. Annual direct-service constituencies include; 1,700+ non-immigrant students; 15,000+ special event participants; 2,000+ study abroad participants; and 20,000+ Passport Office patrons. These areas are staffed by approximately 21 full-time positions and 25 student assistants.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.

Candidate Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field
• Five years of professional experience in global health, travel safety, risk management, international business, overseas program management, or relevant field
• Ability to address emergencies as they arise outside of normal business hours
• A strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and building an equitable and diverse environment within a Hispanic Serving Institution

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate degree in international education, international business, international security and conflict resolution, law, communications, risk-analysis, or related field of study
• Extensive experience in managing a wide range of emergency/crisis situations abroad
• Experience working in a higher education setting
• Experience living, working and/or studying abroad
• Working proficiency in a foreign language(s)
