Position SummaryTHIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT SDSU EMPLOYEES ONLYThe Lead Graphics Designer leads Facilities Services’ Sign Shop staff and operations. The incumbent provides artistic and technical vision and direction to graphic designers and staff engaged in the design, fabrication and installation of campus wayfinding, signage and graphic elements. Serves as the public face of Facilities Services Sign Shop, educating the campus community about the importance of effective environmental graphics, and advocating for excellence in graphic design. Sets customer service standards and guides staff in addressing customer requests and concerns and maintaining good customer relationships. Leads staff who are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the sign shop, including maintaining equipment, a safe and clean working environment, and accurate accounting of materials and supplies. Staff under incumbent’s direction are also responsible for scheduling and coordinating graphic project design and production work (both in the shop and through contracted services) and reviewing work for accuracy, craft and adherence to established standards.The incumbent also oversees overall work for the Sign Shop including work assignments, decisions about capacity and in-house production vs. outsourcing. The Lead Graphic Designer sets expectations for timely completion of work, meeting deadlines, and the highest quality work product. The incumbent provides consultation and graphic design services (and leads staff who do the same) for a variety of campus customers including academic, administrative and auxiliary units, such as Athletics, BFA, Housing, Parking Services, Student Ability Services, URAD, etc. Examples include but are not limited to graphic visualization, signage, maps, branding, donor recognition, exhibits, web presents, campus digital map, etc. As part of the duties, the incumbent will train, develop and mentor staff and may continue to oversee high-profile, complex projects as overall workload or visibility dictates.For more information regarding the Facilities Services department, click here.This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.Education and ExperienceCollege degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field or through technical experience and/or relevant coursework. In addition, strong communication skills and the ability to use and maintain currency with applicable computer software packages and systems are essential to entering this classificationLicense/Certification RequiredValid California Driver’s LicensePreferred QualificationsBachelor’s Degree in graphic design, applied design, fine arts or a related fieldExperience in a lead and/or supervisory capacity of a graphic design studio or sign shopExperience with ADA wayfinding and signageExperience utilizing a computerized maintenance management systemExperience in a higher education environment, military or a large multi-building facility environmentExperience with Illustrator, InDesign, PhotoShop and other image-editing packagesCompensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $5,806 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,104 - $7,425 per month.
