The Simulation and Clinical Lab Education Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the design, implementation, evaluation and revision of all simulation and clinical lab activities using evidence based practice standards, course outcomes and curriculum benchmarks. Using a variety of teaching methods, equipment and advanced technology, the Coordinator will establish a lab learning environment that mimics the clinical setting and fosters active learning, critical thinking, effective communication and the confidence and competence requisite for the provision of safe and high quality care.
Examples of Duties:
- Collaborate with the Director of the center for Clinical Education and Research (CCER0 to promote ongoing quality improvement in all areas related to clinical lab and simulation activities;
- Establish annual goals and objectives for clinical lab and simulation development that support College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS) undergraduate and graduate programs and enhance student learning;
- Integrate the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) and Nurse of the Future Competencies throughout the clinical lab and simulation curriculum to align with the national standards established for entry into nursing practice;
- Develop, evaluate and update the CCER Clinical Policy and Procedures Manual to ensure the safety, efficiency, uniformity and effectiveness of CCER practices;
- Identify and schedule the number of faculty and staff required to effectively run each simulation and clinical lab section;
- Train clinical faculty and teaching assistants in all aspects of the simulation process to develop and enhance their ability to facilitate simulation sessions according to established standards;
- Evaluate and revise the testing guidelines and procedures for the undergraduate student Clinical Skill Competency Testing Program to ensure that it is evidence based and adequately assesses a student’s ability to perform the skill safely and accurately in the clinical setting; provide training to graduate teaching assistants in all aspects of Clinical Skill Competency Program to ensure that the can provide thorough and uniform assessment of students’ skill and accurately document eh testing outcomes;
- Coordinate the progressive design and implementation of Clinical Simulation Days for each clinical group;
- Coordinate the undergraduate Clinical Tutoring Program; supervise graduate teaching assistants in the development of clinical tutoring experiences, including the use of simulation, task trainers and unfolding case studies to provide individualized, experiential learning and contribute to students’ clinical success; provide undergraduate academic and clinical tutoring as requested by the Director;
- Design self-paced learning modules, unfolding case studies and skill learning stations, along with visual teaching aides, including poster boards and handouts, to provide a variety of learning modalities, which will reinforce and enhance students’ understanding of clinical content and ability to perform clinical skills;
- Identify special clinical topics for open lab and coordinate the development of teaching materials, supplies, and equipment; identify, preview and acquire DVDs, CD-ROMs, computer aided instruction, new equipment and technology that enhances students’ learning objectives and the simulation learning environment; integrate the use of A/V equipment, task trainers, simulation and web-based resources into lab sections;
- Facilitate resource matching to student learning needs; monitor the communication process between the referring clinical faculty member and the CCER tutor to ensure that the tutor has adequate information to provide targeted tutoring and that the clinical faculty member receives timely and descriptive feedback; develop, present and evaluate workshops on academic and clinical skills, which will augment students’ clinical and academic learning and contribute to their preparation for nursing practice;
- Serve as the liaison between the CCER and specific course coordinators and their clinical faculty in order to establish a collaborative working relationship for the development of lab curricula, simulation cases and student clinical orientation sessions; maintain ongoing communication through emails, memos, and attendance at clinical faculty meetings and provide information regarding all pertinent student services provided by the CCER and training on the students referral process to ensure that faculty can maximize student success through early identification and referral of students to appropriate CCER resources;
- Orient all clinical and lab faculty and graduate teaching assistants to the clinical policies and procedures, equipment and supplies used in the lab;
- Train, supervise and evaluate Peer Academic and Clinical Coaching Team volunteers (upper-division nursing students) to ensure that they are well prepared to assist with academic tutoring, skill competency testing for fundamental students and supervise open lab sessions;
- Serve as clinical lab and simulation expert to respond to faculty members questions and needs regarding these educational methods; serve as a clinical resource and consultant to the Assistant Director of CCER to ensure the acquisition of appropriate clinical supplies and equipment and the accurate set-up of the clinical labs and simulation rooms;
- Assist the Director of CCER with lab initiatives and other research and curricular projects, when requested; complete appropriate reports, as requested; serve on selected committees and participate in College activities;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree in Nursing, or current enrollment in a graduate nursing program, and a minimum of three to five (3-5) years of adult or pediatric acute or critical care nursing experience is required. Current Massachusetts RN license is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Experience participating in or facilitating high-fidelity simulation in pursing practice or education.
- Academic and/or clinical teaching experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing nursing practice;
- Knowledge of software applications, including office software and database management;
