About SRSU:

Sul Ross State University is a public, comprehensive, Master’s degree granting, multi-campus university, providing on-site and distance education in the Big Bend area and the Middle Rio Grande/Winter Garden region of Texas. Reflecting the vast area of Texas that is served by a single university, in 2018 Sul Ross adopted new measures to bring four campuses closer together under a “One University – Four Campuses” concept. The university is now branded according to its four individual campuses:

Sul Ross State University – Alpine
Sul Ross State University – Del Rio
Sul Ross State University – Eagle Pass
and Sul Ross State University – Uvalde

The University invites applications from higher education leaders for the position of Assistant Dean of Students. This individual will play a key role in student life on campus by organizing and expanding extracurricular activities, developing and supporting organizations and club sports of interest to university students, supporting game day operations for university athletics, and serving as the first contact for students on campus seeking to expand, develop or create additional campus activities.

The Sul Ross campus in Alpine is unique in that it is located in the Big Bend region of Texas and is located not far from an international border, three state parks and two national parks as well as several wildlife areas. The landscape of Far West Texas provides for multiple unique opportunities for recreation and learning in a region far different from most other universities.

The three Rio Grande College campuses are also located along or near an international border, near four additional state parks and a national recreational area. This landscape as well provides for unique opportunities for distinctive recreation and learning unlike those found at most other universities.

The university is designated a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), with approximately 75% of its students of Hispanic origin. The university’s communities are proud of their bi-national and bi-cultural environment and of the access and affordability they provide to underrepresented populations and first-generation students of all ages. The university enrolls approximately 3,000 students; 2,000 at the Alpine campus and 1,000 at the Del Rio, Eagle Pass and Uvalde campuses. The Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and Uvalde campuses are currently organized collectively as the Rio Grande College (RGC).

The Assistant Dean of Students would report directly to the Dean of Students and be responsible for establishing the strategic vision for campus-wide extracurricular programs, wellness programs, and recreational activities, the development, expansion, and execution of new programs and recreational activities, the assessment of current extracurricular campus programs, the assessment of student participation, retention and student success, and the establishment of policies and procedures for extracurricular activities.

A successful candidate must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in sports and recreation, hospitality management, or a related field and over 15 years of experience in the field of recreation, student wellness, employee wellness, or corporate wellness, at least 10 years of which must be experience in student affairs/student activities at institutions of higher education. The university seeks candidates with experiences at a university that is student-centered and committed to serving a distinctive and diverse population of students.

The university especially welcomes candidates who are bilingual (English and Spanish), women, persons of color, and educators who will fit well with the bi-national culture and heritage of the university’s multiple service areas.

The geographic distance (up to 275 miles) between the Alpine and Rio Grande campuses necessitates the assistant dean have the energy and capacity to drive occasionally between campuses, and the ability to advise and assist the Rio Grande College’s campus activities office.

Organization

Working at Sul Ross State University

Called "Possibly the most underrated little university west of the Mississippi" by CBS's Dan Rather, Sul Ross State University in West Texas boasts a combination of small class sizes, an appreciation of both fine arts and the sciences and popular professional programs in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Who Is Sul Ross? Where is Sul Ross?
The university's name honors Lawrence Sullivan "Sul" Ross, the son of a pioneer Waco, Texas, family and a popular soldier, governor, educator and humanitarian. Founded in 1917 as a teacher college, Sul Ross continues to offer teacher education as one of its most popular programs. Others in high demand are business, criminal justice and agricultural and natural resource sciences. Sul Ross achieved university status in 1969.

The university, comprising 647 acres in Alpine, Texas, boasts a beautiful 93-acre main campus of exquisitely-detailed buildings and enjoys perhaps the most temperate climate in the state. Its situation in the Davis Mountains overlooks the center of the city below, yet it remains within easy reach of many local stores and restaurants. The university also has a 468-acre working ranch that serves its animal science programs.

Located in Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and Uvalde, the Middle Rio Grande Campuses offer upper level and graduate courses.  Our professors provide hands on learning in ways that relate to our students and their passion for higher education.  Courses are accessible via interactive television, online learning communities, and face to face classes

Sul Ross State University is part of The Texas State University System, the largest college system in the state after the University of Texas and Texas A&M systems.

A Small Size, But Plenty to Do
With an enrollment of about 2,000 students on the main campus in Alpine, class sizes are small, guaranteeing a much higher level of personal attention from instructors and the university's support staff. But there's plenty for students to do in their free time: lots of student clubs and organizations, a thriving arts community and a strong athletic tradition.

The SRSU men's basketball team won the conference championship five times in the past 20 years, including the 1999 American Southwest Conference championship. The women's basketball team has also won five conference championships and played in eight national playoffs, even making it to the Final Four.

Similarly, the Lobos football and baseball teams have won five conference titles each in the past 20 years, including American Southwest Conference championships in the late 1990s. The Lady Lobos volleyball team has won nine conference championships in all.

Rodeo is significant part of the Sul Ross program, and the university is the birthplace of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Many team members have gone on to become world champions, and 1951 graduate Harley May is a charter member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Hall of Fame.
