The Arthur J. Morris Law Library at the University of Virginia School of Law seeks one or more collegial, intellectually curious, and service-oriented professionals to join our library staff. The position(s)will report to the Law Library’s Assistant Director & Head of Research Services. The Research Librarian(s)will join a highly skilled team of law librarians in providing research support for law faculty, students, and staff; members of the University community; and the public. They will participate in the rotation schedule for providing in-person and online reference services. Our law librarians share responsibility for creating a safe learning and working environment that supports diversity, equity, and belonging for all students, staff, faculty, and public patrons. They serve on the Law Library’s collection development and strategic planning committee, and they may also serve on other committees and project teams, such as the Law Library’s Diversity, Equity, and Belonging (DEB) Standing Committee; Technology Steering Committee; Outreach and Social Media teams; and talent search committees.

As members of the teaching team, Research Librarians act as library liaisons to 1L Legal Research & Writing classes and the Law School’s Summer Research Assistant Program. Depending on teaching experience, they may teach, co-teach, or assist with teaching our for-credit Advanced Legal Research class. Previous instructional experience is helpful; however, the teaching team will provide mentorship, instruction, and support for new and developing teachers. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

The position(s)will allow for exploration and skills development in any of several areas, including collection development; business research; data services; library processes and systems development; outreach support; creation and curation of research guides, online tutorials, and other web applications; and/or video production and editing. A background in one or more of these areas is a plus.

A minimum of two years of experience working in a library is preferred, though well-qualified applicants who are new to librarianship will be considered. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications

•J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school

•Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of library or information sciences (or comparable degree from a foreign institution); students who are making satisfactory progress in a qualified distance learning MLS degree program will be considered.

•Ability to support the Law Library’s mission of providing excellent and timely research support to faculty, students, staff, and the community.

•Knowledge of legal information sources and ability to use a variety of research methods effectively.

•Strong service ethic, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well with diverse patrons.

•Enthusiasm for law librarianship and the librarian profession.

•Intellectual curiosity

•Comfort with technology that is commonly used to provide legal research and library services(e.g., information databases such as Lexis, Westlaw, or Academic Search Complete, JSTOR, SSRN, Web of Science; business software such as MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or similar; internet for research, etc.) and the ability to adapt quickly to a rapidly changing technology environment.

•Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

•Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information in a succinct and clear manner.

•Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

•Minimum of two years of experience working in a library is preferred; applicants who are new to librarianship who have relevant alternative qualifications such as high academic achievement and/or demonstrable success in a customer service or information services field will be considered.

•Demonstrated ability with one or more of the following: public speaking and presenting; scholarly writing; working with web platforms(e.g., LibGuides or Drupal)and/or web apps; video editing or production; data analytics or data visualization; business process automation; project management.
