Penn Engineering is looking for a talented Learning Experience Engineer with software development experience and expertise in Computer Science. The Learning Experience Engineer will be involved in implementing and debugging course automation software, alongside managing the program’s educational software and supporting its use. The Engineer will analyze functional requirements to design and implement solutions, while also creating middleware, when necessary. This position will explain the use of the software by writing documentation, giving presentations, and answering questions from other team members, while performing ongoing support such as troubleshooting and installing software upgrades. Collaborate with our accomplished Engineering faculty to create unique and powerful learning experiences that leverage the latest in learning science and advances in technology to foster engagement and rigorous learning.

Job Description

The Learning Experience Engineer will collaborate with our accomplished Engineering faculty to create unique and powerful learning experiences that leverage the latest in learning science, while also supporting the development and ongoing improvement of technology across courses. The Engineer will write, debug, and implement code using Python 3, Java 8, C++, Javascript, and CSS3. This position will spend half their time working with faculty to plan highly engaging, scalable online courses, driving the learning design process by guiding faculty through key decisions about how to transform their courses for online students. They will then collaborate with faculty to execute the planned approach, assisting with various types of content development, and provide project management to ensure work adheres to timelines and budgets. The other half of the Engineer’s time will be spent managing a software infrastructure consisting of home-grown autograders, commercial software and cloud-based resources such as Codio, Gradescope, Piazza, AWS, etc. This half of the position will focus on supporting and developing technology and autograders for all courses offered through Penn Engineering’s Online Learning Office.

Responsibilities :

  • Work with faculty to design highly engaging, scalable online courses that meet Penn Engineering Online course standards. Manage the development of an average of 1 course at a time, from initial design through launch. Drive the learning design process by guiding faculty through key decisions about how to transform their courses for online students and manage timelines and deliverables.

  • Work with faculty and teaching assistants as subject matter experts and content producers to generate rigorous and engaging learning assets that highlight Penn and our faculty.

  • Maintain a shared software coding and learning environment for students that consists of a collection of commercial and homegrown software. Update software as necessary in response to security holes and other issues. Troubleshoot and resolve problems caused by inconsistencies when new versions of software replace the current versions. Troubleshoot and resolve bugs reported by faculty using the software in their courses. Work with CETS staff to maintain licensing for this software.

  • Support this software by working with faculty to find ways to use this software to accomplish their educational goals. Present and explain the capabilities and use of the software to individual faculty members. Answer questions posed by faculty members about this software. Consider adding features to or changing the behavior of the software in response to requests from faculty members, taking into account the needs of the entire community using the software

  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.


● Bachelor’s degree in Computer and Information Science and a minimum of three years of application development and technology services experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A master's degree in a related field and a background in Computer Science or STEM is strongly preferred.

● Experience working with instructional technology program development and system administration are desired.

● Ability to write, troubleshoot, and implement code using Python 3, Java 8, C/C++, Javascript, and CSS3.

● Familiarity with the VSCode and Jupyter notebooks development environments

● Familiarity with the principles, practices, techniques, technology and standards of digital media production

● Excellent written and verbal communication, an appreciation for higher education and the ability to work with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty and staff

● Knowledge of basic Mathematics, Statistics or Data Science concepts is strongly preferred.

● Strong collaborator and communicator capable of working closely with colleagues to achieve project objectives in a fast-paced environment

● Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and deliver on precise deadlines

● Passion for learning and remaining on the cutting edge of current thinking in the field and an ability to articulate a perspective on these topics

● Also pluses, but not required:

● Experience working in a higher ed institution, collaborating directly with faculty to diplomatically guide them toward effective outcomes

● Familiarity with a variety of web and interactive technologies and how they support effective learning

● Basic understanding of front-end design and development (UX principles, HTML, etc.)

● Knowledge of best practices, processes, and current developments in online education and learning science

● Experience with UX/learner testing, familiarity with principles and processes of human centered design and universal design, experience using analytics to make data driven learning design decisions
