Essential Job Duties:

The Pre-Award Consultant is empowered to act independently in making decisions and authorizing actions such as; contacting the sponsor for proposal clarification or providing post submission but prior to award materials, e.g. revised budget, IRB, or IACUC approval letters. The Consultant works with the Department’s Business Coordinators to assist the Principal Investigator (PI), University administrative units, sponsors, and Department Heads/Dean. The role of the Pre-Award Consultant is critical in interpreting both agency and University requirements as they relate to proposals and policies/practices to the departments and providing support to obtain newly available information on funding volume, the timing of reports, fiscal issues, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
They assist faculty in the creation of their budgets and budget justifications, interpretation of proposal announcements, use of University and sponsor-specific submissions systems. The individual is expected to independently manage the sponsored programs portfolio for the areas to which they are assigned.
Knowledge of internal, state, foundation, and federal proposal submission systems (examples include, but not limited to, PINS, RADAR, Fastlane, eRA Commons, Grants.gov, etc.)

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

3 years of experience working in a laboratory environment.

Experience in laboratory/personnel management, strong analytical chemistry backgrounds, particularly in LC-MS and handling biological samples.

Ability to apply knowledge of sample and data collection, storage, and organization; ability to compile, assimilate and organize both printed and electronic sample records; ability to identify and understand issues, problems, and opportunities and to use effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions; ability to clearly convey, both verbally and in writing, information and ideas to individuals and groups; and ability to use correct grammar, organization, and structure.

Department Required Skills:

Ability to work as a team as well as independently. Outstanding communication skills are vital. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, University, and governmental officials, sponsors, and the general public. Strong knowledge of business administration and accounting practices, budgeting, and forecasting. Must be highly organized and flexible in managing workload. Ability to provide outstanding customer service. Ability to make decisions independently, assess project needs, exercise judgement, discretion, and initiative in the development and interpretation of a wide range of administrative policies and procedures

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience working with grants at a large public institution. Ability to interpret and analyze proposal/grant requirements and plan strategically for submission of proposals. Knowledge of Uniform Guidance.
