Position Summary:

This position is on site at our Cullowhee campus.

Western Carolina University is looking for Digital Designer with an impeccable visual eye and design sensibility. This position is responsible for supporting the overall design and visual elements of the university website, wcu.edu, including the digital spaces for the university magazine and brand campaign.

They’ll spin up custom websites and applications to support marketing, communication, branding, and advancement goals and partner with other UCM teams for work in email marketing, paid media, and social media campaigns.

Reporting to the Director of Content and Digital Strategy, the Digital Designer will be a part of the Web Team. They will collaborate closely with the Senior Web Developer, CMS Administrator + Developer, Media Planning Specialist, and Social Media Strategist.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment, or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, web design, computer science or a related field or equivalent training and experience and one (1) to three (3) years’ related work experience.
- Experience designing websites, applications, digital ads and social media graphics to support marketing and communication goals.
- Understanding of accessible design, or willingness to learn, including designing W3C standards-compliant HTML and CSS, and WAI-ARIA.
- Strong portfolio showcasing successful design work for a range of audiences, channels, and industries – including multiple examples of websites and other digital work.
- Ability to clearly articulate design solutions developed for nontechnical stakeholders.
- Knowledge and interest in emerging technologies; openness to new approaches in design; solid understanding of latest graphic and web design principles and aesthetics.
- A creative thinker who enjoys work independently and as a collaborative member in a diverse team of creative individuals.
