Summary of Duties

The Special Assistant to the President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is a member of the President's leadership team. The Special Assistant will be a visible, accessible, knowledgeable, and a trusted advocate for DEI. The individual is responsible for development and oversight of DEI initiatives in support of a learning and working environment where all have an opportunity to succeed. The role of this position is to engage with students, faculty, and staff to further DEI behaviors, attitudes, policies and practices within institutional operations; grow and sustain relationships among external organizations that support DEI strategy; and use effective cross cultural skills to approach, build trust and negotiate across diverse populations. The Special Assistant champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive college environment and leads the development of an effective strategy to create, support, and advance a culture of respect where individuals from all diverse backgrounds are able to thrive and engage in the social, academic, and intellectual life at the College.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate programs, policies and initiatives that enhance the College’s efforts to increase diversity, improve equity, and cultivate inclusion for all students, faculty and staff.
  • Identify and mobilize participatory DEI initiatives within the external community through conversation, training, curricula, and/or programming.
  • Coordinate training for employees and managers on diversity issues and trends.
  • Develop and serve as the Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
  • Partner with Cabinet leaders to ensure that their functional area work, communications, and decisions are aligned with diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy.
  • Develop a means to measure and provide internal progress reporting of DEI initiatives.
  • Participate in institutional planning, assessment, resource allocation, and budgeting processes as required ensuring that College goals are achieved.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous quality improvement, outstanding service to stakeholders, and a standard of professionalism and leadership that reflects the College vision, mission, values, strategic priorities, and goals.
  • Adhere to compliance with applicable rules and regulations.

  • Experience, Skills & Abilities

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in higher education or a related organization with teaching, coaching, and program development experience;
  • Engagement in diversity, equity, inclusion initiatives;
  • Demonstrated experience in consulting with internal and external constituents;
  • Cross-cultural competencies, including strong emotional intelligence and the ability to engage and build relationships with constituencies.
  • Excellence in communication (both written and oral) and a proven track record of facilitating conversations and mediating diverse opinions.
  • Collaboration, organizational, and leadership skills;
  • Commitment to quality, integrity, confidentiality; and
  • Ability to impact organizational change.
  • Results oriented

  • Knowledge of DEI policy, research, and practice;
  • Adept in Microsoft Office

    Masters Degree required

    PhD preferred
