SDSU is looking for an experienced development professional to join us during this transformational time while we build the 35,000 capacity state-of-the-art stadium and San Diego's future center for world-class sports and entertainment! The successful candidate will be a self-starter, with a passion for developing relationships with donors, and have a robust understanding of an athletics annual fund.

SDSU has been recognized for its exceptional development program by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). With the support of loyal donors and working alongside SDSU’s visionary faculty and staff leaders, SDSU builds lifelong relationships with over 300,000 alumni, friends, and the community that advance the mission of SDSU. Within URAD, the departments of Development, SDSU Alumni, Planned Giving, Special Events, Marketing & Communications, Community & Government Relations, Donor Relations, Financial Management, Information Services, Prospect Research and Management, and Advancement Services are making a difference in the lives of SDSU’s 35,000 students.

The division of University Relations and Development launched its first-ever comprehensive campaign in 2007. The campaign exceeded both the original goal of $500 million and the extension goal of $750 million. The campaign concluded in 2017 and raised over $815 million. The University is in the planning stages for a second comprehensive campaign.

Under the direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Development, the Assistant Athletic Director – Philanthropy will support and enhance the mission of the San Diego State University Athletic Department and the Aztec Club through professional fundraising and major gift activity. The mission of the Office of Athletics Development is to promote the athletics program at SDSU, solicit private contributions as a means to accomplish these purposes, and sponsor or host activities designed to enhance the athletic department while providing alumni, donors, and fans a vehicle to remain loyal to SDSU Athletics.

The Assistant Athletic Director – Philanthropy will oversee the process of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects for identified priorities for the Athletic Department in accordance with department, university, conference, and NCAA regulations. Act as a liaison and caretaker of the Office of Athletics Development and various committees on behalf of the department. Secure major gifts by researching, identifying, cultivating, and soliciting alumni and friends of the university.

Working with alumni, parents, donors, and the community, the units of University Relations and Development work together to broaden the resources available to the university to enhance academic quality and enrich the local and world community.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3 years of experience in successful fundraising and/or sales
  • Ability and availability to attend events or perform duties outside of normal work hours including evenings and weekends

Licenses and Certifications Required

A valid California driver’s license is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Fundraising software experience (TicketMaster, Salesforce, Paciolan and/ or Ellucian)
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience raising major gifts of $50K and above
  • Experience managing a large pool of 100 major gift prospects.
  • Fundraising experience in a large, complex university
  • Demonstrated experience in upgrading donors
  • Experience with comprehensive and/or capital campaigns
  • Experience in college athletic fundraising and/or sales
