Overview and Responsibilities
The Public Safety Training & Resource Officer serves in accomplishing the overall public safety mission of the College. The position assists with the College’s public safety efforts at the Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Menomonie, and River Falls campuses which include loss prevention, customer service, proactive patrols, and parking enforcement. The Public Safety Training & Resource Officer interacts with employees, students, local law enforcement agencies, fire/EMS departments, and appropriate agencies on matters related to public safety. This position reports to the Public Safety Manager.
- Create atmosphere of strong customer service with students, staff, and community members on CVTC campuses.
- Assist with College-wide security efforts to ensure safety of students, staff, and visitors.
- Provide training to new student public safety officers.
- Travel to and conduct proactive patrols at Eau Claire and regional campuses.
- Maintain high level of professional attitude and action when dealing with College community.
- Adhere to and motivate others to follow safety standards set forth by CVTC.
- Respond in a timely manner to all incident response requests.
- Emergency Response Team: Provide guidance and support to events, drills, and assessments of procedures.
- Investigate incidents and prepare materials for evidence and write reports as requested.
- Maintain a professional security presence at all times.
- Support Public Safety office administrative functions.
- Carry out College policy as it relates to campus safety, security, and parking.
- Investigate disturbances, fire hazards, suspicious persons, hazardous conditions, and other conditions on campus.
- Conduct proactive patrol and community policing procedures and respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents as needed.
- Conduct and lead safety inspections of the facilities to detect existing or potential problems and recommend corrective or preventative measures as necessary.
- Perform periodic checks and evaluation of security alarm and fire/smoke alarms to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.
- Respond to calls for service and assist personnel as needed.
- Patrol parking areas, communicate, and enforce parking and traffic regulations.
- Investigate violations of law and/or College policy/procedure and forward to proper authorities.
- Provide security services for special events held on College property as requested.
- Write accurate and detailed incident reports. Summarize results of investigations to document campus incidents. Submit written and verbal reports to supervisor for review and determination if further action is required.
- Respond to calls for service and maintenance of pay-per-hour parking lot.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current public safety regulations and CVTC student code of conduct policy/procedure.
- Demonstrated ability to assess and act prudently and quickly in crisis situations and deal with responses to emergencies.
- Knowledge of radio communication equipment.
- Basic knowledge of effective radio communication and APCO 10 codes.
- Knowledge of verbal and non-verbal tactics to safely de-escalate emotional persons.
- Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the College (including evenings and weekends).
- Ability to be available for call-in basis in the event of emergencies or by request of the Public Safety Manager.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as the ability to work independently toward department goals.
- Proven ability to resolve conflicts.
- Ability to use judgment, discretion, and decision making skills in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
- Ability to be self-sufficient with little direct supervision.

- Basic knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Associate degree in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement or a minimum of 60 credits in Criminal Justice or a related field.
- Successful background in applying law enforcement/public safety practices and techniques.
- Two years’ experience working in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement preferred.
