Overview and Responsibilities

The Retention Specialist supports college retention efforts through the U.S. Department of Education’s Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) authorized by the American Rescue Plan. The Retention Specialist will identify, support and case manage students who are at risk of not completing their education as a result of the COVID -19 pandemic. This position is part of the Student Success team and will work collaboratively with Academic Advisors and Student Success Specialists to identify and address barriers impeding degree completion with the goal of improving student performance through target interventions. The Retention Specialist will report to the Director of Advising and Services. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Student Services teams to identify at-risk students who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Provide proactive, intrusive supplemental support and advising to a targeted population.
  • Work collaboratively with Academic Advisors in the development of academic plans for degree completion.
  • Assist students with the degree audit process.
  • Assist students in making appropriate academic and career choices through career advisement and career planning.
  • Coordinate the development, implementation, review, and monitoring of on-going general case management of targeted population.
  • Work collaboratively with Academic Advisors and Student Success Specialists to monitor assigned students, including academic progress and early alert support.
  • Provide financial resources and support to students by referring and collaborating with Financial Literacy coaches and the Financial Aid department.
  • Case manage progress of at-risk students and measure the impact of prescribed interventions through specified case management dashboards and databases.
  • Develop proactive outreach activities and communication plans for assigned at-risk student populations.
  • Assist at-risk students with developing personal skills to succeed and overcome barriers.
  • Collaborate with and refer cohort students to appropriate Student Services departments and resources.
  • Maintain confidentiality, including all student records.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Intermediate knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field (e.g., counseling, psychology, communications, public affairs, student services, human development).
  • Minimum of one year of experience in student services/client related area.
  • Case management experience preferred.
  • Post-secondary experience preferred.
  • Spanish or other bilingual capabilities advantageous.

Location and Campuses

Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC) is part of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) and serves an eleven-county area in west central Wisconsin. The largest campus is located in Eau Claire and includes a Business Education Center and Health Education Center, plus a Manufacturing Education Center at the Gateway Campus and an Emergency Service Education Center and Energy Education Center at the West Campus. CVTC has regional centers in Chippewa Falls, Menomonie, Neillsville, and River Falls. The College is one of 16 WTCS colleges located throughout the state.

Student Profile

Student enrollment exceeds 8,000 credit students per year, plus over 9,000 non-credit students, with full-time equivalents of over 4,000. The median age of credit students is 24. Approximately 68% of students receive financial aid and 44% are Pell Grant students.

Programs and Placement

CVTC offers 110 programs, 35 certificates, and customized training to an average of 140 businesses annually. CVTC has an outstanding placement rate, 95% of graduates are employed within six months of graduation, with 87% in a related field. CVTC has nationally recognized faculty and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Business and industry leaders serve on advisory committees and help CVTC match its curriculum to the needs of today's workplace. Courses are offered at numerous locations in traditional classroom settings, as well as online and in a variety of blended and hybrid formats.
