Job Description

Assistant/Associate Professor:  The Department of Radiation Oncology is recruiting a faculty medical physicist to be part of their growing team on FLASH radiation therapy.

The successful candidate will join our team of dedicated Medical Physics faculty at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).  This is a clinically-funded position and clinical responsibilities will include quality assurance, machine maintenance and calibration, support for special procedures such as our stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) program comprising Linac-based SRS treatment planning, GammaKnife, and GammaPod; high dose-rate brachytherapy; thermal therapy. Active participation is also expected in teaching of medical and physics residents, medical students, medical dosimetrists, and radiation therapists, and a recently-initiated medical physics graduate certificate program.  

Medical Physics in  the Department of Radiation Oncology has a robust research program with 4 active NIH R01 awards and numerous industry-sponsored awards and collaborations. For FLASH, our facilities include proton FLASH on the Varian Probeam system, electron FLASH on a decommissioned Varian C-series linac, and a dedicated “beamline” small-animal radiation research platform (SARRP) system installed in our proton center for preclinical image-guided proton FLASH research.



Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in medical physics, engineering, or related physical science and ABR board certification/eligibility in radiation oncology physics. The successful candidate will have a significant track record of high-quality publications/presentations and research funding in FLASH radiation therapy.  Expected rank for this position will be Assistant Professor or higher; final rank and tenure status, and dedicated resources will be commensurate with selected candidate’s experience and funding. 

Facility and Equipment

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland provides a full range of clinical services at the University of Maryland Medical Center and its 4 well-integrated community programs, and the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC). All practice sites are connected via a telemedicine network facilitating frequent interactions between facilities. The Medical Physics Division includes 28 faculty physicists, 26 dosimetrists, 3 physics residents, 8 information systems and technology staff, and additional research staff. Services provided include proton therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery/ radiotherapy, brachytherapy (low- and high-dose), and thermal therapy (hyperthermia). The Department is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including 4 Varian TrueBeam, 4 Varian Trilogy, 2 Varian Clinac IX, 1 Varian TrueBeam Edge, 1 BSD 500 (superficial thermal therapy unit), 1 BSD 2000 (deep thermal therapy unit), 1 Gammaknife, 1 GammaPod, 2 HDR units, and 5 multislice large-bore CT simulators with 4D capabilities. In addition, MPTC includes a 5-room proton therapy facility with pencil beam scanning, 1 dual-energy CT simulator, and 1 Siemens MR scanner (1.5T). The department has access to clinical PET/CT and MR scanners in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. Campus-wide shared resources include small-animal imaging CT, PET, and MR scanners. Treatment planning systems from multiple vendors include RaySearch Laboratories, Varian Medical Systems, BrainLab, and Elekta/Nucletron. Research facilities include office and lab space of 19,200 sf, with a 1,000-sf machine shop.
