The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law is seeking a Managing Director for the Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Programs. The Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Programs are two areas of concentration for law students and faculty at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.  Each year, approximately 45 students complete the Business Law Track, the Intellectual Property Law Track, or both.  In addition, the programs sponsor a variety of symposia, workshops, and lectures for scholars, students, practitioners, and members of the community.  Faculty affiliated with the programs conduct research on a wide range of topics related to business and corporate law, intellectual property protections, and entrepreneurship.  Both programs have active student organizations, and they work closely with the student edited Journal of Business and Technology Law.  For more information about the programs, go to https://www.law.umaryland.edu/Programs-and-Impact/Business-Law/ and https://www.law.umaryland.edu/Programs-and-Impact/Intellectual-Property-Law/.  The Managing Director of the Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Programs performs professional staff and analytical work of above average difficulty.  This position reports to the Director of the Business Law Program and the Director of the Intellectual Property Law Program. This position handles administrative aspects of both programs, including writing and production of newsletters and promotional materials, coordination of the Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Tracks, supervision of externship programs, planning of conferences and other events, and research and preparation of grant applications. Teaching responsibilities are also involved, as well as extensive interaction with law students and collaboration with faculty at the law school and at other schools on the UMB campus and within the University System of Maryland. The work requires the application of a high degree of technical skill, knowledge and judgment in the use of fundamental principles, concepts, techniques, standards and guides.  This position works with and assigns tasks to the Academic Services Specialist working with the Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Programs.  UMB was ranked one of America's Best Large Employers by Forbes Magazine (Feb 2021). BENEFITS:This EXEMPT position offers a generous benefits package that includes 22 vacation days, 14 floating and holidays, 15 sick days; comprehensive health insurance and retirement options; and tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any of the University System of Maryland schools. In the Fall of 2021, UMB will require all faculty, staff, and students to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources.   PRIMARY DUTIES:
  • Maintains close contact with students to assist them in preparing for and pursuing careers in the fields of business and intellectual property law.  Advises students and manages administration of the Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Tracks.
  • Administers Business Law and Intellectual Property Law externship programs and teaches or coordinates with the appropriate externship workshops.
  • Manages all Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Program conferences, speaker series, panel discussions, workshops, and graduation events.
  • Writes, edits, and/or oversees print production of programmatic promotional materials, including newsletters, conference/event brochures, and web pages.  Composes program correspondence and responses to requests for program information.
  • Organizes the workflow related to administration of the Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Programs and allocates responsibilities to the faculty support staff and student assistants by matching their skills/abilities with the requirements of the job.
  • Acts as an intermediary for the faculty directors of the Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Programs by interacting with government and university officials, faculty and staff at all levels, and members of the public.  Provides information requiring comprehensive knowledge of institutional policies and procedures and special issues relating to the Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Programs.  Interprets policies and rules for others. 
  • Actively recruits students for the programs.
  • Identifies and helps to recruit adjunct faculty to teach in the programs.
  • Facilitates career development and job placement of students and graduates in collaboration with the Career Development Office.
  • Works closely with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations to maintain databases of program alumni, strengthen relationships with graduates of the programs, and identify opportunities for alumni engagement.
  • Oversees accounting of program funds for the Business Law and Intellectual Property Law Programs, in consultation with the faculty directors.
  • Acts as a liaison with student organizations, including the Business Law Society and the Maryland Intellectual Property Student Association.
  • Oversees joint degree programs relevant to business and intellectual property law students, such as JD/MBA and JD/PharmD programs.
  • Opportunity to teach and/or coordinate law school classes, including Foundations of Business Law and an introductory level course in intellectual property or entrepreneurship law.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Education: J.D. from an ABA approved law school required.Experience: Three years of experience in professional administrative and/or program/practice management required.  Background in business law or intellectual property law preferred. Some teaching experience is preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Advanced legal skills, knowledge, and judgment in the use of fundamental legal principles and concepts.
  • Ability to develop and teach introductory-level law school classes relating to business law, intellectual property and/or entrepreneurship.
  • Strong counseling and academic advising skills.
  • Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision.
  • Leadership, coaching, teambuilding, and interpersonal skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships with coworkers, students, alumni, and members of the public.
  • Ability to network and interact, as well as support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals.
  • Excellent strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions.
  • Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects as well as conduct research and information gathering.
  • Ability to handle multiple ongoing tasks that require daily or weekly updating and attention.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communications, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create and manage a budget.
