Summary of Duties:Under general supervision, the Specimen Processing Technician Lead performs semi-technical duties in the animal Sample Receiving section of the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL). Duties include, directly and through lead activities, evaluating case submissions, entering data and test requests into the laboratory information system database (VADDS), pre-analytical processing of submitted specimens, shipping samples to other laboratories as a certified shipper, and provide support services to clients submitting specimens to WADDL. This position assists the section manager in prioritizing case accessioning, trouble-shooting problematic diagnostic case submissions, assigning, instructing and checking the work of section staff, and assists with the preparation of staff schedules for the section. The incumbent may drive a WADDL vehicle to pick up and deliver samples and packages off campus. Familiarity with basic laboratory practices, equipment, and aseptic techniques is essential. Eligibility and understanding of BSL-2 laboratory safety guidelines and work environment is required.
Required Qualifications:
Two years of college-level science in an applicable field AND six months of experience as a Specimen Processing Technician; OR high school graduation or GED Certification AND 18 months of clinical laboratory experience in a Clinical or Public Health Laboratory; OR equivalent education/experience.

Ability to work rotating Saturdays and holidays as scheduled.
Possession of, or ability to obtain at time of hire, a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience using VADDS or similar laboratory information management or electronic medical record system.
Experience leading or directing the work of individuals.
College level Microbiology coursework
Exceptional data entry skills, demonstrating speed and accuracy.
Experience in a medical, healthcare, and/or veterinary laboratory setting.
Experience providing exceptional customer service.
Experience/Familiarity with Hand-Off Communication Standards.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to respond constructively to stressful situations and problems.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced
Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.
Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
