Campus Police Chief

This position isresponsible for the management of the College Campus Police Department. Duties include supervision of police officers, campus safety officers and student cadets whose duties are to promote and protect the safety andsecurity of all personnel, students, visitors, and facilities of thecollege. The position is alsoresponsible for enforcing traffic and parking rules and regulations on allcollege campuses and ensure safe vehicular flow during special events. The incumbent will also provide leadership inimplementing safety education programs for faculty and staff, and activelyparticipate in the Crisis Assessment Team. The position reports to the Executive Director of CampusSafety and Operations.


Uphold college regulations, Code of Student Conductand enforce applicable State of Illinois and Federal laws and statutes.

Supervise full-time and part-time police officers, part-time campus safety officers, part-timestudent cadets and other support staff. Develop policies to ensure qualityadministrative controls, guide officer conduct, and comply with training andqualification standards such as use of force and firearms proficiency.

Responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, performancereviews and taking disciplinary action when necessary to ensure professional conduct of police officers, campus safety officers and cadets. Direct staff development and/or community involvement efforts forofficers and cadets.

Ensure the Campus Police Department is compliant withState and Federal mandates related to certifications, qualifications, reportingand training standards.

Represent the college as Campus Police Chief incommunity meetings and events.

Actively engage students, staff, local law enforcementrepresentatives and members of the public to build community relationships.

Assist with long term planning, budget preparation andmonitoring of fiscal resources of the department by organizing, directing, andcontrolling personnel and equipment.

Manage work load to ensure comprehensive investigationand reporting of criminal and suspicious activities and service complaints.Develop and implement polices to collect, preserve and safeguard evidence.

Ensure the Campus Police Department employees receivetraining to provide initial emergency first aidservices.

Direct subordinates to manage traffic and providesecurity at special events and large group activities held on any WaubonseeCommunity College campus.

Take appropriate preventive action to protect personsand property and monitor state and federal “Hazards in the Workplace”regulations.

Direct staff to issue emergency notifications andtimely warning messages for students and facultyin case of emergency college closing, severe weather conditions or other campusemergency events.

Coordinate investigation, communications and training withoutside public safety agencies such as sheriff’s office, fire departments, and911 dispatch center.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Campus Safety and Operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field required OR Associate degree with progressively responsible supervisory and administrative law enforcement experience.

Minimum of eight years of full-time policing experiencewith a recognized police agency or college campus law enforcement agency required.

Minimum of two years supervisory experience in a lawenforcement agency at the rank of Lieutenant or above required. Specific experience in post-secondaryinstitution policing preferred.

Successful completion of oral interview, criminalbackground, psychological and physical fitness assessments.

Ability to maintain physical and mental healthconsistent with requirements of the college’s law enforcement officers. Maintain annual firearm range qualificationand current certifications required of other Waubonsee Community College PoliceOfficers.

Currently certified as an Illinois Police Officer withthe Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standard Board requirements.

Familiar with NIMS practices required. Advanced NIMStraining preferred.

Valid Illinois driver’s license and acceptable drivingrecord.
