Assistant Professor of Teaching



The School of Biological Sciences at UCI is hiring an Assistant Professor of Teaching with the potential for security of employment. The faculty member will initially implement a dry laboratory experience coordinated with the first-year core biology undergraduate curriculum (Bio 93 - DNA to Organisms; Bio 94 - Organisms to Ecosystems). We seek a scholar who would be responsible for the development, deployment and assessment of this new first-year laboratory course for biology majors. The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to effective teaching utilizing inclusive, data-driven pedagogies and an interest in pursuing discipline-based education research. The position requires a Ph.D. in the life sciences and expertise in undergraduate biology education and pedagogy. Review of applications will begin June 27, 2021. Teaching Professor Faculty are full members of the Academic Senate. Advancement in this series is based on excellence in teaching, research in a specific discipline and/or pedagogy, and service. It is expected that the successful candidate will engage in undergraduate instruction, conduct biology education research, and collaborate with teaching and research faculty to develop, implement and assess innovative pedagogical initiatives.

If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) positions will be subject to institutional reference checks.

Research Statement (3 pages). This statement should:
  1. Detail the candidate's specific area of expertise, with a description of their contributions to the field.
  2. Provide a detailed plan of their future independent research program, and how this program will be leveraged to obtain extramural funding.
  3. Indicate how the candidate's research program will synergize with the research environment at UCI.

Teaching Statement (1 page). This statement should:
  1. Indicate the candidate's teaching experiences to date, including experience with teaching/lecturing to undergraduates/graduate students, or other populations, as well as their areas of interest. This should also include mentorship that they have given to others in the line of research or outreach activities.
  2. Detail the candidate's teaching approaches and philosophies, as to how they will engage in effective teaching strategies.
  3. Provide evidence (if any) of effectiveness of previous teaching.

Diversity Statement (1 page). The UC Statement on Diversity is available at: http://regents.universityofcalifornia.edu/governance/policies/4400.html. Applicants will be evaluated on their required statements of their contribution to diversity. This statement should:
  1. Indicate how the candidate has demonstrated awareness of the issues faced by historically underrepresented or economically disadvantaged groups and the benefits of a diverse and inclusive faculty.
  2. Provide evidence (if any) of the candidate's track record and success in activities aimed at reducing barriers in education or research for underrepresented or disadvantaged groups.
  3. Detail specific plans (if any) to contribute through campus programs, new activities, or through national or off-campus organizations.
