Stanford University's Precourt Institute for Energy concentrates the talents of the university on energy research and education, from basic science and technology to policy and business. We disseminate research results and help the university develop energy-literate leaders as part of its educational mission. We also build collaborations globally with industry, other research institutions, government and civic organizations in pursuit of sustainable, affordable, secure energy for all people.

More about the Explore Energy program:

The Explore Energy program is a new program set that will provide a one-stop, web-based resource for all students interested in energy—aggregating classes, majors, research, internships, clubs, mentoring, networking, events, and jobs. Courses and fellowship programs are offered under the Explore Energy umbrella at PIE for both undergraduates and graduates of any major, providing opportunities for students to learn about energy and sustainability both in an academic and an applied setting. The Explore Energy program has an advisory board of Stanford faculty, staff and students.

The goals of the Explore Energy Program include:

• Help students navigate and connect with Stanford programs, research opportunities, mentoring, internships, networks and career guidance
• Demonstrate clear pathways and roadmaps that orient students as they discover the breadth of energy, regardless of their backgrounds or majors
• Engage with students to help them discover how energy relates to the topics they are interested in - the environment, social justice, equity, poverty, development, corporate responsibility, etc
• Lead students to the courses and opportunities on campus that relate best to their interests and will increase their awareness of how energy connects to those interests

• Develop substantive interdisciplinary mentorship and career guidance for job placement in various aspects of the energy field, leveraging existing efforts at Stanford and linking students to energy-related faculty, peers and alumni
• Be the “go to” resource for student-related energy programs and energy related questions on campus - and to reach students early in their Stanford journey. This implies a robust student outreach and advising program on the topic of energy that is not a substitute for the departmental advising role, but is meant to be additive and complimentary to it.

Contribute to the energy literacy of students on campus

Expand the reach of the Understanding Energy course as a gateway to other energy-related courses and opportunities on campus, and support the offering of condensed versions of the course to Stanford faculty and staff and to summer students, possibly in the future to alumni audiences and in residential education.

Enhance students' energy knowledge through experiential learning

Support an experiential learning program in the Stanford Energy ecosystem, connecting students to existing efforts and creating new ones that make use of Stanford as a living laboratory / sim city - such as doing research or apprentice experiences at our state-of-the-art energy facilities

With faculty leadership, scope new experiential learning which may include an honors capstone experience and/or a minor in energy

Collaborate with Sustainable Stanford and student clubs to leverage existing efforts and enhance student engagement with energy systems on campus

POSITION SUMMARY:

Stanford's Precourt Institute for Energy (PIE) seeks an Explore Energy Program Manager to assist the Explore Energy Managing Director, in developing and leading a comprehensive student engagement program for experiential learning, energy literacy and mentoring that will serve undergraduate and graduate students across Stanford's seven schools. The candidate will work closely with the other full time Explore Energy Program Manager to expand and grow the program. We are looking for a Program Manager who is creative, passionate about working closely with students, and is excited to help build a world-class student-facing integrative energy program from the ground up.

Precourt Institute for Energy (PIE) is a teamwork-focused and collaborative work environment. The Explore Energy Program Manager will report directly to the Managing Director and work closely with the other full-time Explore Energy Program Manager. The Program Manager will meet regularly with the faculty directors. The program manager will also connect with other program managers, staff, and directors at various PIE meetings, check-ins, and social events. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, the position will be conducted remotely until Stanford University deems it safe for staff to return to campus. Regular meetings, check-ins and interactions will all be done via Zoom.

CORE DUTIES:

• Student engagement is a big part of this role. The candidate should have an enthusiasm to work with students and be excited about developing strong, lasting connections with them. Knowledge of Stanford University as a student is preferred but not required.
• Creativity, passion, and excitement to create a positive, meaningful program for Stanford students to help them navigate their connections with energy on campus is a must - we are here to broaden their experience, to increase their ability to have a positive impact in the world, to support their goals and help steward them towards being good global citizens. Community building is an important part of Explore Energy.
• Develop program workflows and processes to manage a growing program; oversee and monitor the budget; and devise strategic plans and operational documents.
• Build a robust communications network across campus and help develop creative communications materials for students.
• Lead and support experiential learning opportunities such as Energy@Stanford&SLAC.
• Support the development and growth of new efforts, such as an alumni / peer mentoring program for students.
• Generally support the Managing Director and the Explore Energy program in various ways (including taking notes, managing to-do lists, scheduling meetings, developing communications for Explore Energy advisory board members, evaluating programs, etc.)

• Marketing Explore Energy and related programs, including managing and developing the student Energy Lounge.
• Event planning and official launch, e.g., to bring students together, to provide networking opportunities with alumni.
• Online support, including managing the Explore Energy website and curating resources for it, coordinating the development of an Explore Energy phone app, etc.
• Self energy education - personally stay up-to-date with the latest in energy information by reading, watching/attending seminars, etc.
• Collaborate and work together with other program managers at Precourt, particularly the Explore Energy team.

OPTIONAL: Please note that due to current COVID-19 safety measures, our office is working fully remote through Spring 2021. Once COVID-19 safety measures are no longer applicable, this position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting, subject to operational need.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Experienced program manager.
• Background in energy fields is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

• Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
• Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
• Occasionally use a telephone.
• Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
