The Office of the Vice-President & Principal supports the priorities and objectives established by the Principal in accordance with the UTSC Strategic Plan and the University's Three Priorities. The office provides leadership for academic and co-curricular activities, community and institutional partnerships and works to raise the profile of the campus local and internationally.

Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Vice-President and Principal, the Director, International & Global Engagement is responsible for coordinating and supporting initiatives that build the University of Toronto Scarborough’s strategic position in regard to international activities and enhance internationalization on the UTSC campus, in a way that complements and aligns with the University of Toronto’s overall international strategy and vision.

Working in close collaboration with portfolios across campus that deliver international programs and services, including the Office of the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean, Office of the Vice-Principal Research & Innovation, Office of Student Experience & Wellbeing, and Development and Alumni Relations Office, the incumbent provides research expertise and support to shape, strengthen and coordinate a strategic, coherent and integrated approach to undertaking the range of international activities on the campus and to pursuing appropriate new initiatives.

In collaboration with relevant UTSC offices, the Director builds, and maintains relationships with local international/diaspora communities, other academic institutions, international government offices, private sector organizations, international organizations and non-government organizations.

The Director is responsible, through collaboration with all executive portfolios, for supporting the implementation of UTSC’s international engagement priorities and the campus’ mission and vision, with the goal of enhancing:

  1. academic program partnerships and their impact
  2. global research networks and knowledge translation activities and their impact
  3. entrepreneurship and innovation partnerships and their impact
  4. advancement resources and alumni engagement activities
  5. global awareness, prominence, and attraction of UTSC among prospective students, faculty staff, scholarly networks, and other partners

Further, the Director collaborates with the Office of Student Experience & Wellbeing, academic departments, and the Office of the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean to strengthen and implement new initiatives that support global engagement at home. Core activities will include supporting the development of a framework and identifying best practices, resources, and collaborations for increasing the global fluencies and competencies of students through curricular and co-curricular programs.

The incumbent works with the Department of Marketing & Communications along with relevant partners, to develop a strong brand and marketing strategy for UTSC international activities, and coordinates with the Institutional Planning and Research Office to maintain a comprehensive repository of information on international activities, agreements, and metrics.

The Director must establish strong collaborative relationships with administrative and academic leaders from the campus and the University in order to coordinate a strategic approach to global engagement and international partnerships across a range of initiatives and activities; provide advice to senior leaders on the implementation of international relations plans and priorities as determined by senior leadership; provide advice on strategies for mitigating potential risks, negotiating and assessing campus-based international agreements (including coordination with relevant Central Administrative Divisions); manage external and internal relationships and events the University of Toronto Scarborough has with international partners; and manage international institutional visits to the campus and visits abroad by campus leaders, ensuring appropriate representation and a favourable impact upon UTSC’s reputation among existing and prospective partners.

Qualifications:

(Minimum Qualifications)

Education: Graduate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: 6 to 7 years of experience in progressively senior roles related to internationalization, preferably in the higher education sector, with demonstrated experience working with Canadian and foreign senior executives, government officials, and diplomats. Excellent knowledge of international affairs and leadership experience with the development and execution of internationalization strategies, global engagement activities, and partnership networks among colleges or universities. Previous experience with diplomatic engagement and protocol would be significant assets. Strong background in international development best practices, with demonstrated evidence of working and living abroad or with intercultural teams. The incumbent must demonstrate proven experience in building relationships with partner organizations and institutions (both internal and external to the University), based on mutuality, integrity, accountability, and commitment.

Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office. Outstanding ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively. Ability to actively listen to partners, donors and faculty, identify areas of common interest, and to articulate a compelling case for UTSC. Excellent analytical and research skills, and ability to solve problems in a creative and efficient manner are also essential. Must have excellent negotiation, influencing and advocacy skills, along with a high level of political acumen. Must be able to conduct thorough research, concisely summarize information and provide a rationale for action. The incumbent must have strong decision-making skills, superior planning and time management skills with a focus on executing and completing tasks under pressure and within deadlines.

Other: Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively, across the University and across organizations. Proven success in providing superior service and support in a busy, demanding environment. Must be able to identify and understand emerging policy issues, as well as set and manage priorities. Related competency in data analysis, project planning and management, and event logistics. Sound judgment, tact and sensitivity in dealing effectively with culturally diverse populations. Knowledge of the norms and conventions of diplomatic protocol. High degree of confidentiality and discretion. Detail oriented, resourceful, innovative, flexible, and accessible. A high degree of precision, accuracy and attention to detail are required for negotiation and administration of institutional agreements. Willingness and ability to travel internationally. Ability to operate in multiple international languages will be a strong asset.
