Overview

The Assistant Dean for Student Engagement and Leadership reports directly to the Vice President of Student Development and Services. The Assistant Dean has the primary responsibility for programs and campus-wide special events providing social, recreational, cultural and educational programs and activities, to enhance student engagement and is responsible for improving campus programs continuously in response to changing needs of students and college priorities. The Assistant Dean is responsible for working with students and student organizations, providing oversight, advising support, and organizational development opportunities for all registered student organizations and their respective leaders.  Additionally, the Assistant Dean is responsible for sponsoring student engagement in the community and philanthropic efforts.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Vice President in planning, analysis, development, and implementation of short- and long-term goals for the Office of Student Life.
  • Assure the implementation of programs designed to assist students’ acclimation to the University and to encourage optimum participation in all University and student activities and programs.
  • Serve as Student Government Association Advisor.
  • Provide leadership and coordination for the planning of campus-wide programs and events.
  • Responsible for recruitment, selection, advising, training and oversight of the Student Activities Council.
  • Responsible for planning and implementing special events collaboratively with students, staff, and faculty (e.g. Homecoming, Family Weekend programs, Orientation, etc.).
  • Responsible for the assessment, design, promotion, and production of social, recreational, cultural and educational student programs and activities that will meet the out-of-class needs and interests of and will enhance the development of the University’s diverse student population.
  • Coordinate and monitor the registration of student events, the maintenance of student organization records, contracts, correspondence, and event registration processes.
  • Responsible for reviewing and recommending revision of all student organization policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring student organizations’ awareness of and compliance with institution policies and guidelines, as well as municipal, state, and federal laws.
  • Serve as a resource to student organization leaders and assist them with organizational goal setting, and with planning organizational events, programs and activities.
  • Responsible for development and management of budgets assigned to the department, maintenance of appropriate departmental correspondence and records.
  • Provide 24-hour emergency on-call response in residence halls and campus critical situations
  • Develop and promote all student community and philanthropic programs.
  • Develop, publicize, execute and assess a program of extra-curricular activities and events for students at Centenary that is broadly perceived as being of excellent quality and of interest to a diverse student body. Programs should engage students with various robust day, evening and weekend programs. 
  • Guide and support students as they plan activities and experience hands-on learning with skills like event management, advertising, problem solving and assessment. This includes overseeing each event to its conclusion for student activities, trips off campus, intramurals, sports, & recreation, and late-night events.
  • Support and enhance commuter life on campus through events and improvements to space.
  • Maintain and seek to make improvements to the Student Activities Center. Manage intramurals, fitness and esports program. Help to increase student attendance and spirit at campus events.
  • Manage the campus wide activities weekly calendar, space booking requests, postings, bulletin boards, website and social media account.
  • Assess effectiveness of programs and initiatives. Analyze the needs of the student body for continued improvements of all departmental programs to best serve and retain the whole student.
  • Participate in committees such as Commencement, Leadership Awards, Speakers Committee, and others as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree preferred; Bachelor’s degree required
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Strong work ethic
  • Knowledge of Intramurals and Esports

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-5 years in related work experience; previous work experience in higher education and/or recreation desired
  • Excellent leadership and management skills including ability to effectively problem solve
  • Organizational and analytical skills
  • Experience in budget management
  • Strong supervisory skills
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including many nights and weekends.
  • Highly effective spoken and written communication skills across a variety of groups (students, staff, parents, etc.)
  • Computer proficiency in computer programs (MS. Word, Excel, Publisher, MS Outlook and PowerPoint)
  • Possess high degree of self-motivation with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
