The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications and nominations for the position of Aquatics and Safety Coordinator in the RecSports Department. This is an exempt, 12 month, full-time; non-tenure track staff position.

The Division: The Division of Student Life is comprised of over 400 staff members that serve our students through 22 departments and functions. Staff are actively engaged in the lives of our students, living and learning with them in our residence halls, student union, and other campus environments. The Department: The RecSports Department facilitates a wide variety of recreation-based opportunities for the University community.  The RecSports Department manages four recreation facilities, including the TRECS (Tennessee Recreation Center for Students), the SAC (Student Aquatic Center), the RecSports Field Complex at Sutherland, and the RecSports Fields at TRECS.  With the doors open for more than 100 hours per week, the RecSports Department aims to engage students in a variety of recreation activities including intramural sports, group fitness classes, personal training, outdoor adventure trips, Sport Clubs, Aquatic programs, open-gym basketball, climbing/bouldering, racquetball, weight lifting (free weight or machine), and/or cardio exercises.  The RecSports department is also the 2nd largest employer of students on campus with more than 300 students employed part-time for the majority of the year.  The mission of the UTK RecSports Department is to provide and deliver recreational experiences that enhance the growth & well-being of our students and community through programs, facilities, services, and employment. The vision of RecSports is to engage and develop all Vols for a better future.

The Position:  The Aquatics and Safety Coordinator manages all aspects of the Aquatics programs and supervises the Student Aquatic Center staff.  The aquatics programs include classes for Learn-to-swim, Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instructor, and Lifeguard Instructor.  Responsibilities also includes  recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating student employee's, enforcement of departmental and university policies & standards, dealing with patron conflict resolution, coordination of space for programs, user groups and events.  Design, implement and evaluate all RecSports Department safety training.  Plan, schedule and document all safety trainings.  Oversee all special events and swim meets scheduled at the Student Aquatic Center.  Maintain the stock of first-aid supply for the department.

Participates as a liaison for RecSports with academics, athletics, facility services, student life, and other departments to meet the needs for University programs.  Maintains professional relationships with other departments on campus via workshops, meetings, and committees.



Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required.  Professional experience working with students in a campus recreation program or similar organization of comparable size; Ability to work with diverse constituencies, prioritize multiple work responsibilities in time-sensitive situations, work with limited supervision, supervise, and delegate work to student staff, exercise good judgement, handle different situations with confidence and leadership, and be flexible; Knowledge of teaching and programming for swimming pools, PC and Mac operating systems, and Microsoft office suite; Strong verbal and written communication skills, customer service skills, and interpersonal skills. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree preferred.  Preferred certifications include, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, Aquatic Facility Operator.  Experience with computer programs (i.e. Microsoft Systems, online group management systems, online assessment tools, Innosoft Fusion, WhentoWork, Connect2); Knowledge of the role of, trends, and best practices in aquatic programming and event management.  Demonstrated presentation skills and teambuilding facilitation experience; Ability to work with the community and outreach groups; Membership and participation in the NIRSA.
