Primary Purpose of Department:

The Center for Teaching and Learning is UNC Charlotte’s central pedagogical and instructional support organization for faculty. The Center for Teaching and Learning supports the strategic goals of the university related to teaching and learning. The Center assists faculty by promoting teaching and learning excellence, supporting the integration of learning technologies, facilitating the redesign of courses for improved student engagement and retention, and encouraging scholarly teaching.

Primary Purpose of Position:

Functioning in an instructional consultant capacity, the primary purpose is to provide project management, leadership, and collaboration in assisting program directors, faculty, and instructors design and redesign courses and programs with engaging learning activities and compelling content. Specifically, the position provides design, development, revision, management, and support of courses and programs working directly with faculty, instructors, and program directors to provide andragogical and instructional design consultation to support effective and innovative delivery of Continuing Education and Distance Education programs. The position provides instructional design and development for courses and assists in the selection and development of digital learning objects/multimedia for online, hybrid, and flipped courses.

Instructional in nature, these duties are associated with the regular academic and educational experiences provided by the university, are uniquely supportive of those academic and educational experiences, and involve significant and independent interaction with participants in the university’s instructional and educational program.

This position has responsibility for and contributes significantly to the online and distance course design efforts and supports the other instructional design programs and initiatives that relate to the growth of online learning and continuing education at UNC Charlotte, requiring expertise in instructional systems design and best practices in teaching and learning. This will include planning, implementing, promoting, managing and evaluating the changes associated with learning environments and instructional systems. The position requires that a substantial proportion of the work commitment is devoted to instructional activities and the direction of educational/academic supportive activities.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

Consult and work collaboratively with teams, individual faculty, individual instructors, and instructional staff to design and develop courses, in various modalities, in a timely manner aligned to the production schedule and goals of the unit.

Guide, advise, and support faculty in the andragogical use of the enterprise level instructional technologies, such as the learning management system, for online learning and other programmatic needs related to online learning.

Create, assist, and oversee the design, selection of, and development of learning objects for online course development.

Minimum Education/Experience:

MINIMUM:
Demonstrated experience designing and building online courses
Experience with Quality Matters framework

Requires a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Instructional Systems Technology, Curriculum/Instructional Design, Teaching, or related field to teaching and learning.

The position requires possession of post-baccalaureate credentials and independent experience in comparable instructional or educational activities. Requires a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Instructional Systems Technology, Curriculum/Instructional Design, Teaching, or related field to teaching and learning. Commensurate experience will be considered.

Strong knowledge of instructional systems design (ISD) methods, online course development, Quality Matters design and evaluation processes, instructional strategies and methodologies, instructional technologies, media selection/design, evaluation, needs analysis, scholarship of teaching and learning, learning theory, and research design in the social sciences required. Must have knowledge regarding the appropriate hard and soft technologies and their applications used in redesign of courses for online environments.

Ability to provide constructive feedback and to work in a team-oriented environment required. Must have the ability to organize a program responsive to instructional needs and goals and the ability to manage complex projects with different stakeholders. Exceptional communications skills are required, in both writing and public speaking/presentation. Must be confident in leading instruction.

Must have classroom teaching or training experience. College teaching preferred. Experience providing support to faculty, trainers, or curriculum developers is desired.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
3-5 years experience in Higher Educational setting
Doctorate preferred
Previous college teaching experience
Experience providing support to faculty, trainers, or curriculum developers is desired.
Qualified to lead Quality Matters workshop/s and/or Quality Matters certification such as Peer Reviewer, Master Reviewer, trainer, etc.
