BASIC FUNCTION:

Responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive, holistic, and integrated approach to mental health in order to positively impact the mental health and overall wellbeing of URI students. Provide strategic leadership and programmatic oversight to a multi-disciplinary mental health staff committed to the management of existing and long-term mental health needs of a diverse student population. Responsible for planning, directing, budgeting, coordinating services and supervising the activities of the Counseling Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide leadership to ensure the implementation of clinical counseling services which adhere to the highest professional standards and best practices for college counseling services, including providing and overseeing the delivery of clinical supervision, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, professional consultation, outreach programming, a training program and administration.

Responsible for the oversight of supervision and evaluation of staff, ongoing staff development, policies and procedures, a community outreach program, a training program, and ensuring the delivery of evidence-based mental health services.

Contribute to creating a culture of care and success for all university students from enrollment to commencement by providing leadership, oversight, and commitment to a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative student counseling.

Maintain a minimal caseload of direct clinical services and provide consultation to clinical staff on difficult cases.

Understanding of and commitment to the principles and practices of college health, including supporting integrated clinical care, working in partnership with physicians, medical providers, clinicians, and health promotion colleagues; participating in a model of team-oriented leadership, working in partnership with fellow directors to address multi-faceted challenges; and responding to the needs of various external constituents.

Supervise the delivery of effective, short-term, personal counseling services to students, and develop policies and strategies for access, consultation, crisis intervention, and referrals.

Assure the provision of group counseling services, develop prevention strategies, and provide outreach educational programs.

Supervise the selection and training of graduate students in counseling, clinical psychology and social work employed by the Counseling Center.

Serve as the liaison with other internal and external partners to bridge the various dimensions of mental health including Student Affairs, Housing and Residential life, URI Police department, colleges/departments, student representatives and many others.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop programs, workshops and facilitate forums for University students, faculty and staff on mental health and related topics, as appropriate.

Supervise the collection and analysis of data regarding the psychological and developmental needs of students. Supervise research projects in relevant areas, such as: alcohol and other drug use and abuse, efficacy of counseling interventions, and community psychology interventions.

Perform other duties as required.

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Certification as a licensed psychologist in the State of Rhode Island or eligible to be certified as a psychologist in the State of Rhode Island within three months of appointment.

Required Qualifications:

REQUIRED:

1.Doctoral degree in counseling, clinical psychology, or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.

2.Certification as a licensed psychologist in the State of Rhode Island or eligible to be certified as a psychologist in the State of Rhode Island within three months of appointment.

3.Minimum of six years of post-graduate clinical work experience.

4.Demonstrated supervisory experience.

5.Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

6.Demonstrated familiarity with how issues of difference, power, and privilege manifest in a higher education environment.

7.Demonstrated experience with collaborative and innovative approaches to the mental health needs of a college-aged population.

8.Demonstrated experience in crisis intervention with individuals and groups.

9.Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

10.Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

11.Demonstrated ability to collaborate with those concerned with mental health issues (i.e., clients, parents, faculty, staff, other professionals, etc.)

12.Demonstrated experience evaluating and directing day to day administration of a complex mental health service operation/staff.

13.Demonstrated experience using a data-informed approach to evaluate information and implement timely, cost-effective recommendations.
