Job Summary:

The Public Services Librarian assists library users directly with library services and information resources in both library and online spaces, including conducting research, selecting needed material, and developing research strategies contributing to student success and the vision and mission of the Library to advance the Learning Commons.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Uses existing and emerging technologies to enhance library services and instruction
• Assists in reviewing and revising appropriate guidelines and procedures to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the libraries
• Trains and supervises support staff and student workers as directed
• Gathers data, compiles data and creates reports, and analyzes library statistics; assists in making data-based recommendations for continuous improvement
• Collaborates with faculty to develop instruction opportunities and learning objectives to meet the needs of students and the college community, providing orientations, tours, class presentations, and online learning objects that support successful development of information literacy and research skills
• Serves on search advisory committees to select new employees as needed
• In the absence of the Director and Assistant Director, assumes responsibility for library operations as directed
• Assists in developing, maintaining, and evaluating the collection to support instructional programs, community needs, and lifelong learning pursuits
• Participates in campus and College committees as appropriate
• Helps to promote library awareness and use; markets library resources and programs to students, faculty and staff
• Keeps current on changing professional practices and advancements in the fields of libraries, student learning, and academic technology
• Works with other members of the library, learning commons, campus, and college to meet the goals and mission of the library and the college 
• Travels throughout Tarrant County as needed 
• Promotes and maintains an effective learning environment in the Learning Commons 
• Actively participates in college-wide conversation on student engagement and success 

• Assists in building and maintaining community relations with a broad and diverse audience including faculty, staff, students, administrators and the community to promote the library and the college, and present a positive image of the college’s academic support services
• Performs other related responsibilities as necessary to advance and ensure the success of the learning commons 
• Identifies, cultivates, and develops effective and innovative outreach and engagement activities, making direct connections to students, faculty and staff and the community at large to actively promote the role of the library as a partner and support collaborations and activities that enhance student, faculty, and staff success at all levels 
• Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
• Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC)
• Supports the values of the College: diversity, teaching excellence, student success, innovation and creativity and service to the College
• Supports the mission, values and 3 goals and 8 principles of the College

Required Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensures:

• Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited library program
• Two (2) years of experience in library public service areas

Desired Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensures:

• Two (2) years of professional library experience in a community college setting
• Experience working with computerized systems and searching online databases
• Experience assisting students with research projects
• Demonstrated teaching experience, including knowledge of effective instructional methods and experience with developing library instruction and learning objectives
• Active participation in local, state, regional, and/ or national library and learning organizations
• Experience working closely with student services or programs providing direct support to students
• Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends

Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

• Knowledge of automated library systems and web applications
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively and work productively, collegially, cooperatively, and collaboratively with a variety of diverse individuals and groups in a complex and rapidly changing environment 
• Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
• Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software 
• Understanding of and commitment to the community college philosophy 
• Professional or personal experience with and interest in culturally diverse groups, diverse learning styles, and the ability of higher education to contribute to a more just and inclusive society 
• Works accurately with attention to detail

Special Instructions Summary:

This is a part-time position with evening and weekend hours, maximum 19.5 hrs. per week.
