Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant 1 will perform experiments in a neuroscience lab researching Alzheimer’s Disease. The position requires a variety of experiments performing PCR, electrophoresis Western blotting, electrophysiology from Drosophila neuromuscular junction, cell culture work, immunohistochemistry and general lab maintenance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform research work using standard techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry and cell culture. This includes PCR, DNA analysis, protein analysis, cloning/sub-cloning and electrophysiology from Drosophila neuromuscular junction. (50%) Generate, maintain and analyze tissue culture cell lines. (10%) Collect, record and organize raw data and update laboratory data folders. (10%) Maintain clear and organized records of experiments in notebooks, document procedures used and cell growth data generated. (10%)Configure and operate basic laboratory instruments; and ensure instruments are maintained. (10%). Order laboratory supplies. Maintain stock reagents, supplies and inventory used in the lab for microscopy. (10%)

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the basic sciences. Ability to rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Ability to operate laboratory equipment.Ability to meet consistent attendance.Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.Basic knowledge of Microsoft office.Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines technical and educational backgrounds within the department, school and university, and with individuals outside the university.Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through.Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, and dependable.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. The lab is an open floor plan with abundant bench space and ample desk space with computers. The lab is equipped with one shared fume hood for storage of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. The cell culture room nearby is equipped with incubators, culture hood, and microscope. The employee should expect frequent interactions with lab members and must be willing to collaborate.
