Area Coordinator/Community Life Programming Coordinator Job Description

Job Summary: The Office of Community (Residence) Life supports the academic mission of the College by creating safe and inclusive educational residential environments that promote student success and holistic development. The Area Coordinator/Community Life Programming Coordinator takes primary responsibility for achieving the goal of fostering the growth and development of the first-year residential area, managing community concerns, addressing policy violations, supervising paraprofessional staff, and supporting administrative and operational functions for the Office of Community (Residence) Life. Area Coordinators will also manage conduct processes for their assigned areas and participate in the campus-wide on-call duty rotation. Night and weekend work is required. This is a 12-month, live-in position (apartment provided), with meal plan while classes are in session.

Primary Areas of Responsibility:

Supervise Student Resident Assistants (RA):

  • Directly supervise a staff of undergraduate student RAs, provide direction and support to assist student RAs with their responsibilities.
  • Encourage academic, personal, and professional growth in RAs through regular meetings, mentoring, performance evaluations, and other planned interactions.
  • Direct programming model implementation focused on academic support, community development, holistic student development, and student success, including programming budget management.

Supervise Assigned Residential Areas:

  • Manage components of campus conduct policies and restorative practices within Residential Areas, including enforcing college policies, mediating residential disputes, and encouraging communal responsibility.
  • Assist with opening and closing of residence halls, including student move-in.
  • Complete periodic inspections of assigned Residence Halls and coordinate with appropriate campus offices to resolve facilities and safety issues.
  • Maintain knowledge of resources that students can approach for answers regarding college policies, referrals, and developmental issues. Make referrals to appropriate on-campus and off-campus resources as necessary.
  • Utilize campus management software to communicate with students, manage room assignments, and campus conduct.

Community Life Programming:

  • Lead and manage the design, implementation, and assessment of the Community Life Programming Model (Paraprofessional Staff & Professional Staff Programming)
  • Assist the Associate Director of Community Life with oversight of Community Life Programming Budgets & overall program assessment data

Additional Community Life Functions:

  • Participate in year-round Coordinator on-call rotation, including weeknight and weekend coverage; respond to crisis and emergencies as necessary.
  • Assist with administrative operations such as student staff selection, housing assignments, roommate assignments, key management, lock-outs, and facility-related problems.
  • Participate in professional and student staff training and development and departmental assessments to ensure health and safety on campus, continuous improvement, and best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to creatively and efficiently problem solve - utilizing sound judgment, assuming ownership of a problem, and resolving it in a collaborative manner.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure in crises.
  • Strong organizational talents, ability to multi-task, and effective use of electronic office tools such as Microsoft Teams, shared Google Docs, electronic calendaring, etc.
  • Ability to develop appropriate, welcoming, and productive relationships with a diverse student population.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with college constituents and the community.

      Working Conditions:

      This work is typically performed in an office setting and will require significant contact with students, faculty, staff, and the campus community. Regular hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am-1:30 pm on Friday; however, hours will vary widely to include working evening and weekends, contingent on on-call duty rotation, student activities, and events. May be required to work on some college and national holidays if residence halls are open.

      Physical Requirements:

      • Ability to move around the campus and frequently climb a flight of stairs in the residence halls.
      • Manual and physical dexterity and visual acuity needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents.
      • Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on a computer monitor, in handwritten form, and printed on paper.
      • Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.

        Education and Experience:

        • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
        • Experience in residence life, student life, student conduct or other related activities in higher education, undergraduate experiences will be considered.
