The University Press of Kentucky seeks a Production Director to oversee the design, composition, creative vision, and production of all books from visual concept to print and electronic publication for 55-60 titles per year. Production Director supervises two FTE staff plus interns and temporary positions. Manage publication schedules, contract designers and compositors, printing, binding, and shipping suppliers, and archiving and distribution of electronic print and ebook files. Administer work to both in-house and freelance designers and compositors and have thorough knowledge of book design. Supervise all aspects of printing, binding, and shipping from various suppliers. Manage short-run digital printing and ebook conversion programs. Manage production budget and operations, providing or facilitating production expense estimates for individual titles and negotiating with vendors for the best pricing and schedules. Make adjustments in print management plans and strategies as needed in order to control costs, monitoring equipment, pricing, and capacity with vendors.Skills / Knowledge / Abilities:
Excel, Windows, and database and project management software experience (Filemaker).
Successful candidates will have the ability to manage multiple and overlapping projects and to be an effective manager of resources. The position calls for strong project and schedule management skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with others. Candidates should be conversant with printer technologies, have a working knowledge of typography and book design.Does this position have supervisory responsibilities? :
