GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision, the College and Career Transition Counselor will be responsible for providing direct services to students, parents/families, and school staff with local school districts and the college to support school retention, college and career preparation and postsecondary success. This position will have a focused priority on fostering greater equity in the outcomes for students of color and other equity seeking populations.

This position will require a positive attitude, high level of detail, effective relationship building and collaboration skills with a diverse group of individuals and departments within the College and community. This is a year round position where 80% of the time will be spent at the high school and 20% of the time (and summers) at Kirkwood. Some evening hours and daytime travel will be required throughout the year.

Lead- regardless of title, through positive influence. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, college, and career goals and plans with a particular focus on students of color and other equity seeking populations.Collaborate with high school counselors and other school personnel to support academic success, career exploration, goal setting, leadership development, college planning, and campus visits for all students.Responsible for case management to include: proactive communications, case documentation, follow-up with students, faculty and other resources to increase student success.Provide students with information regarding application, educational offerings, financial aid, assessment testing and course placement, and related school district and college policies and processes.Assist students with course selection, creation of academic plans, registration process and facilitation the transfer of students to colleges and universities.Collaborate with college personnel including: admissions, advising, financial aid, student activities, concurrent enrollment, housing, and registration.Assist with summer programs, college orientation sessions, and other recruitment or enrollment events.Collect and analyze student data and confer with school and college staff to identify and refer students in need of more intensive academic support such as tutoring, extended learning, mentoring, and counseling.Responsible for monitoring attendance, academic performance, college prep course selection, and supporting students in determining educational and career goals.Conduct family and community outreach and education activities to strengthen family/school partnerships and facilitate college selection and financial planning.Collaborate with high school personnel to develop systems for implementing individual career and academic plans (ICAP) needed for success in post-secondary education.Support a smooth transition from 12th grade to postsecondary education for students and families.Connect students and families with community and higher education resources to support success in school and facilitate planning for post-secondary education.Serve as a resource for school staff, students, parents/families, and community members.Teach college/career exploration courses, first-year experience courses, student development courses and direct workshops for students.Participate in professional development, as directed by the community college.Collaborate with other college departments including but not limited to Academic Departments, College Credit in High School; the Workplace Learning Connection, Kirkwood Adult High School & Continuing Education program; and other appropriate business, agency, and community organizations.Perform other related work duties as assigned.PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in School Counseling or related program leading to Iowa licensure as a School Counselor. Experience in counseling, advising, recruitment, promotions, admissions or related experience in secondary and/or postsecondary education settings. Demonstrated competence working with financial aid and academic programs serving low-income, minority, and ELL students and families. Understanding of the community college mission, knowledge of current college educational and student services procedures and practices, with a demonstrated focus on student success. Evidence of ability to use data and research to develop, assess, and improve student success outcomes. Well-developed skills in oral and written communication with ability to prepare and deliver public presentations. Competency in using computers and other forms of technology to carry out daily tasks. Must maintain a flexible work schedule with ability to plan, organize and manage time.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Professional Service License or School Counselor Endorsement. Must have a valid driver’s license and own transportation.
