Specialist/Senior Specialist, Radiation Safety

The Boston University Research Integrity office is part of the Office of Research, a group dedicated to aiding the research community in navigating the lifecycle of their work, from finding funding to creating proposals to helping inventions find their way to the public.

This position is part of the Division of Radiation Safety and Medical Physics Team which ensures a safe radiological environment that is compliant with all policies, standards, regulations and laws. The Senior Specialist, Radiation Safety works under the Direction of the Director of Medical Physics and Radiation Safety and is responsible for radiological safety on both campuses and hospital while remaining flexible in assignments across all areas and departments served by EHS. The position is expected to regularly exercise discretion utilizing advanced technical knowledge and skills in the area of radiation safety and handle complex, technically difficult hazard assessments, identifications and resolution determinations.

This position is eligible for the generous tuition remission at Boston University.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in a scientific discipline (health physics, biology, physics, chemistry, or Associates Degree and professional certifications NRRPT, CLSO, MLSO, CNMT, and RT and 1-3 years’ experience in clinical, academic or industrial settings.

Knowledge of radiation regulations and programs. 1-3 years (for specialist level), 3+ years (senior specialist level) work experience in clinical, academic or industrial settings. Excellent technical written, verbal communication, and analytical skills. Must be able to walk for prolonged periods of time and be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must have working knowledge of computer packages including Microsoft Office. Work in areas wearing personal protective equipment such as a Tyvek suit and gloves to decontaminate equipment and areas such as radioiodine therapy rooms in the hospital. Daily inspections in laboratories could result in exposure to chemicals, radiation and biohazard materials. Must be able to respond to emergencies on campus during off hours, including weekends and holidays as part of the on-call emergency response team. Should have or be able to obtain the 40-hour OSHA hazardous waste operations and emergency response training. This position requires completion of a pre-placement physical questionnaire and on-site physical and medical surveillance upon hire. Employment is contingent on initial and continued successful background checks as determined by Boston University and applicable external agencies and meeting all applicable elements of Research Occupational Health Programs and Personnel Suitability & Reliability Program (includes initial and random drug screening) throughout the period of employment. Please note: the standards of background checks, etc. may change at any time should there be amendments to applicable laws or policies relevant to Boston University and the NEIDL.
